Most of us will be responsible for closing out of the life of another at least once - if not more. When you only do something a minimal number of times, it is nearly impossible to do it well, let alone while impaired in the haze of loss.

As the only next of kin,  EterNav founder, Kasey Smith has been responsible for more than a fair share of losses. As word spread that she had dealt with the proc ess a lot, she began to get calls from others, most often in a time of confusion following a loss. To date, Kasey has acted as the personal loss advocate for nearly 100 families, some who used the services of a funeral home as well as many who did not.

From these experiences, Smith worked collaboratively with the University of Maine's Computer Science department to develop a working prototype of this new technology. EterNav features user friendly navigation that makes it easy to comply with local regulations, state laws, and religious customs.

EterNav is currently working on the next generation of the technology which begins introducing the first of several proprietary toolkits that will assist those navigating such a tremendous responsibility. This new system is planned for release in mid-2017.

For those interested in becoming more knowledgeable about EterNav or how to help people prepare for or handle after death, please contact us about our Loss Advocate Training program (available NOW!).

Healthy Acadia Seeks AmeriCorps VISTAs
Help Combat Hunger

In partnership with Hunger Free America, Healthy Acadia is seeking two, full-time AmeriCorps VISTA service members to combat hunger and poverty in Downeast Maine through the Anti-Hunger & Opportunity Corps (AHOC) project. These one-year, 40-hour per-week service positions begin June-July 2017 and are based out of Healthy Acadia's Ellsworth and/or Machias office(s).

The national Anti-Hunger and Opportunity Corps project (AHOC), an initiative of Hunger Free America since 2010, with support from the USDA Food and Nutrition Service, the Corporation for National and Community Service and the Walmart Foundation, is one of the largest anti-hunger AmeriCorps VISTA projects in the country. Its main focus is to fight hunger and improve nutrition, primarily by breaking down barriers to accessing the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as the Food Stamp Program) and expanding economic opportunity and ensuring healthy futures for all Americans, mostly through the SNAP Employment and Training program. Members also serve to increase the capacity of anti-hunger community organizations to help meet the needs of low-income community members, particularly to seniors, working families and non-English speaking populations.   For a full position description, please visit:   https://healthyacadia.org/documents/VISTA_Position_Jun17.pdf.

Program Benefits include a biweekly living allowance, health benefits, modest housing assistance and training support, relocation and childcare assistance (if applicable), optional life insurance, one year non-competitive status for federal government positions, Segal Education Award ($5,815) or End-of-Service stipend ($1,500), the potential to forbear or defer student loans while in service, and a support network of over 180,000 AmeriCorps VISTA members and alums.

VISTA service positions are highly competitive and will be filled as suitable applicants are found. Please send resume, cover letter, and references in a single document to Katie Freedman:  [email protected] . Please indicate whether you are interested in serving in Hancock or Washington County, or both.

While You're Away

While You're Away is a unique service designed for busy adults who find themselves in the roll of primary caretaker.

We visit your loved ones in rehabilitation centers, nursing homes or long-term care facilities to check on their well-being. When you aren't able to check-in at least weekly--maybe you live too far away or you need to be out of town for a while and just want to be sure someone is checking in, we'll do that for you!

We will arrange to have someone stop by as many times as agreed upon, at different times of  the day or night to check-in and visit while you're away and will keep you informed about how your loved one is doing. If we have a concern, we will notify you right away and, if you can't get here quickly and need someone to advocate, we can arrange to do that for you until you arrive. You're loved ones will know that we are here for them and you will have peace of mind. That's quite reassuring, isn't it!

All our contractors will be trained to look for tell-tale signs of neglect, to ask specific questions and to notice typical signs that will alert us to a potential problem.

You will get weekly updates, your loved ones will have a regular visitor and all of you can be assured that someone is available should assistance be needed.

Composting workshop
Free workshop in Stockton Springs

MAY 16TH

Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle your organic waste into "Black Gold" to fertilize your gardens! Wayne Kraeger will present a Composting Workshop at the Stockton Springs Town Office, Lower Level on Tuesday,  May 16th at 6:00 pm.

Composting is nature's process of recycling organic materials from your kitchen and yard/garden waste into a rich soil known as compost. Backyard composting is an acceleration of the same process nature uses. By composting your organic waste you are returning nutrients back into the soil in order for the cycle of life to continue. An important added bonus is the reduction of your household waste that would otherwise end up in a landfill. Finished compost looks like soil - dark brown, crumbly, and smells like a forest floor.

The Composting Workshop is sponsored by the Stockton Springs Community Library and the Stockton Springs Recycle Committee. The program is free and all are welcome.

Tai Chi and Qigong
Stockton Springs Community Library May 21st

"Neighbors Helping Neighbors: Seniors at Home in Stockton Springs" speaker series will host Michael Shunney speaking about Tai Chi and Qigong at the library on  Sunday, May 21st at 2pm .

Mike Shunney has studied and played Taijiquan and Qigong here in the states and in China. He has attended many workshops and has learned from some of the finest Taijiquan and Qigong Masters in the world. He has competed successfully nationally and internationally, including in Fuzhou, China with the ten member U.S. Taijiquan team. He has focused on community education programs as well as teaching in college and university programs. Mike and his wife Constance Evens operate Inner Works Healing Arts Center in Rockland.

The word Qigong (pronounced chi kung) is a combination of two ideas. "Qi" means air, breath of life, or vital energy of the body, and "gong" means the skill of working with, or cultivating, self-discipline and achievement. The art of Qigong consists primarily of meditation, relaxation, physical movement, mind-body integration, and breathing exercises.

Tai chi is an ancient Chinese tradition that, today, is practiced as a graceful form of exercise. It involves a series of movements performed in a slow, focused manner and accompanied by deep breathing.

This monthly series of talks at SSCL is in response to the growing interest in "Aging in Place" a widespread movement geared towards helping senior citizens stay in their homes as long as possible as they age. With the current growing number of elders, this movement has the potential to improve the quality of life for many seniors.

Admission is free and all are welcome. Light refreshments will be served. For more information visit   www.stocktonspringslibrary.org  or phone 207-567-4147.

Castine Historical Society Summer Exhibit -  Castine's Devoted Women: Partnership and Social Reform 1910-1962

The Castine Historical Society's 2017 Summer Exhibit Castine's Devoted Women: Partnership and Social Reform 1910-1962focuses on the lives of Mary W. (Molly) Dewson and Mary G. (Polly) Porter who were life-partners during an age of progressive change encompassing woman's right to vote, labor and wage reform, and feminism.

Molly Dewson was one of the first women to have national political power and influence in Washington D.C.  She earned the respect and friendship of many high profile political figures including Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt during her work for social reform and women's equality.

The story of the two women over their 50-year partnership is told through their words and those of their contemporaries taken from newspaper clippings, letters and memoirs.  The recent gift to the Society of 28 scrapbooks kept by Molly and Polly has provided a wealth of material for the exhibit.  Volunteers spent many hours searching through the pages of the scrapbooks to select the most appropriate images to highlight their story.  These images were then converted into historical panels, which have striking relevance to today's social and political culture

Exhibit opens Monday, June 12 . Admission is free.

June 12 - Labor Day | Monday - Saturday 10 AM-4 PM | Sundays  1-4 PM

Responsible Beverage Server and Seller Training
Healthy Acadia

Where:  June 14, 2017  at Ellsworth Public Library
June 19, 2017  at Atlantic Oceanside, Bar Harbor

When:  For both dates:  8:30 am  -off-premise/seller training;  1:00pm  - on-premise/server training

Maine's bustling tourist season is just around the corner and stores, restaurants, and taverns will be recruiting new servers and staff. For establishments where alcoholic beverages are sold, it is critical for employers and managers to ensure that new hires are familiar with current state liquor laws and the importance of preventing sales to minors and to individuals who are visibly intoxicated.

Healthy Acadia will offer Responsible Beverage Server & Seller Training, on June 14 in Ellsworth and June 19 in Bar Harbor, to  provide employers and employees who sell alcoholic beverages with the knowledge they need to better identify and prevent violations of liquor laws. This course emphasizes increasing employees' knowledge about liquor laws, the importance of preventing underage sales and sales to visibly intoxicated individuals, and offers guidance for refusing service when necessary. Employees will receive training on best practices to identify minors, false identification, and signs of visible intoxication.

Responsible Beverage Seller and Server training will be held on Wednesday, June 14  in the Community Room at Ellsworth Public Library, located at 20 State Street, Ellsworth. On Monday June 19, this training will also be offered at the Atlantic Oceanside, 119 Eden St, Bar Harbor. Off-premise trainings -  for employees of businesses with off-premise liquor licenses, including grocery, liquor, and convenience stores  - begin at 8:30 a.m. and on-premise trainings -  for employees of businesses with on-premises liquor licenses, such as restaurants, hotels and bars where alcohol is consumed  - will start at 1:00 p.m.

Training employees through this 4-hour course may lead to reduced insurance rates for participating businesses and will help reduce the risk of making costly and/or tragic unlawful sales.  All participants receive a certificate of completion valid for 5 years.  Pre-registration is required.  Registration fee is $25.00 per participant. Participants must arrive on time and bring a valid photo ID for certification.

For more information, to sign up for training, or to schedule a training for 6 or more employees at your business, please contact Tara Young at 667-7171 or  [email protected] .
Bucksport Arts Festival returns in August
August arts

The 3rd Annual Bucksport Arts Festival will be returning to the waterfront this August with thanks to the generous support of Seaboard Federal Credit Union. As the primary sponsor in 2016, Seaboard FCU will continue their support for 2017 in recognition that the arts are part of a healthy, thriving community.  As a member-owned cooperative, Seaboard FCU is a vital part of the community itself and strives to provide quality financial services to all members at fair and reasonable rates and terms. Supporting the Festival is yet another way for Seaboard FCU to support their members, business partners, and community.

Forty artists have recently been selected to participate this summer. These fine artists and craftspeople will be showcasing a diverse selection of good for all to enjoy, including: paintings, drawings, jewelry, pottery, sculpture, fiber, glass, and woodworking. Several familiar faces will be returning from previous years, and many new artists will also participating for the first time. All proceeds of the 2017 Festival will benefit Main Street Bucksport, our non-profit partner whose mission is to promote a vibrant downtown Bucksport by supporting existing businesses, attracting new businesses, and supporting cultural arts events.

The Festival is currently seeking food vendors to feed the crowds on Saturday, August 12th.  Vendors of all kinds are encouraged to apply, although preference will be given to local businesses with artisanal quality food.  Interested vendors should contact  [email protected]  for an application.

Questions? Contact Festival Coordinators Lyndsey Marston at  [email protected]  or Laurie Brooks at [email protected].
