Dear St. John Paul II Families,
This morning was a very special day here at StJPII! We opened our doors to our newest families who will be joining us for the 2017-2018 school year at our “Saints Welcome”. I am so grateful to all the Ambassador Families for welcoming our new parents, answering their questions, and making them feel like family here at St. John Paul II Catholic School. Also, a big shout out to our PTO Hospitality Committee for the festive and delicious luncheon last week. I appreciate you for honoring our wonderful faculty and staff!
Next week, will be the first week in May, only five weeks away until we close out the year! I hope that all of you are making plans to attend the many events that are planned over the next month, including hearing our award-winning band, checking out our TARTS performing Alice, and our very own rendition of Annie. I can’t wait to enjoy these performances with you!
Finally, thank you so much for taking the time and responding to the 2017 Parent Survey. The survey link will close tomorrow. It only take a few minutes to complete, is anonymous, and your responses will provide valuable insights about how we can continuously improve and maintain excellence.
I truly appreciate your feedback.

Duke TIP Honors
The Duke University Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP) is an organization that searches for
academically talented students throughout the country. Every year, several StJPII students qualify for the program and this year was no exception...
40 StJPII seventh graders qualified for Duke TIP! They were invited to take the same SAT or ACT exams that High School students take when applying for college. 18 of the StJPII students who qualified took the tests this winter. Of those, we are proud to announce that 6 StJPII students earned state recognition: Meyer Jane Davis, Jade Garrido, Nhat Tong, Emma Welsch, Heather Yeung and Ivy Yeung. Way to go!

StJPII Band And Chorale Shine Again
In early April, StJPII Band participated in the seventh annual Houston Symphonic Band Concert & Sightreading Contest and earned straight first division ratings (the highest of five ratings given). For receiving a first division in both Concert and Sightreading, the band was awarded the Sweepstakes Award! This marks the seventh consecutive year the band has received the Sweepstakes Award! Additionally, the entire low brass, low woodwind and percussion sections were noted as "outstanding sections" by the judges and each bandsman in those sections received a medal – 25 in all!
Way to go BAND!
The StJPII Chorale also attended the contest. The choir performed 3 selections for the judges. Although the Chorale was one of the smallest choirs in the competition, it earned first division superior ratings from all 3 judges in the Concert category. Congratulations on this significant achievement!

Kudos to Mrs. Ickert Cruthirds
Congratulations to Stretch Teacher Mrs. Ickert Cruthirds on becoming a Certified Academic Language Therapist (dyslexia therapist) and completing her Masters in Education in Reading and Writing. She was recognized at a graduation ceremony last week through Neuhaus, which is where she finished the DTPP (Dyslexia Therapist Preparation Program). As a bo
nus, she and her husband got to meet Henry Winkler, a.k.a. "The Fonz", who was the keynote speaker! Mr. Winkler
was an undiagnosed dyslexic who did not read his first novel until the age of 31. He now writes children's books for students with learning differences based on his own personal experiences in school.
Congratulations to Mrs. Ickert Cruthirds!

Support Fun in the Sun
Check out the new Fun in the Sun sign on the pavilion fence and don’t miss out on the opportunity to have your family or student’s name on the fence, as well!
We will be putting some extra ‘sunshine’ on the fence over the next month - each sun will represent a family donation to the Fun in the Sun event. This is the perfect chance for you to go online to ‘Spread some extra sunshine on StJPII’ with your contribution. Look for your family or child’s name on the fence as our way of saying "thank you" for supporting StJPII. Special thanks goes out to the Davis family for underwriting this fun sign.
Your contributions will help PTO purchase games, prizes, food and rent larger equipment such as the bounce houses, rock climbing wall and bungee jump. The funds that the PTO raises from our Fun in the Sun event will go back to the school in the form of teacher wish lists and requested classroom items.
If you have any questions or need more information, please contact Kristen Matthews (fits@jp2.org).
