Dear Students, Parents, Teachers & Friends of Education,

Sims Associates Learn Life Skills

Leadership Barrow is a leadership development initiative of the Barrow Chamber of Commerce. The program encourages and fosters the development of community leaders and volunteers. It helps them strengthen leadership skills and recognize their responsibility as community and organizational leaders. To support our community, the Leadership Barrow Class of 2016 chose to provide a reading center at the new location of the Boys and Girls Club in the Wimberly Center. Class members designed the center to include a bi-level book nook to be built in multiple pieces that can be easily taken apart to rearrange. It can also be put together on one level to form a stage. After raising money for the project, Leadership Barrow approached the construction department at Sims Academy to build it. The Sims Academy associates worked under the direction of instructor Mr. James Deaton to build and paint the project. They finished it off by covering the top surfaces in carpet. Ms. Debi Krause, Vice President of Membership and Leadership Barrow Coordinator for the Chamber of Commerce designed and made pillows for the area. WBHS art students contributed an original painting to be hung above it. Boys and Girls Club members will find plenty of fun and relaxing space to explore their world through reading in the club's language arts room.

In another joint endeavor Sims Associates built and installed the Wimberly Center Sign. The construction, engineering, and graphic design programs at Sims Academy worked together to design, build and install a 14 foot high sign for the Wimberly Center. The students worked with local professionals from Shield's Contractors in Statham to form and set the concrete base. The design is a triangle post with two fronts and houses eight signs to indicate the organizations housed inside the center.

Russell Middle School also called on the Sims Construction Associates to design, cut out Paris letters, and construct an 8-foot tall 3-D figure of the Eiffel Tower for RMS 8th grade formal dance. Project pictures click here .

BCMS Goes to Washington

One hundred forty Bear Creek Middle students, teachers, and parents visited Washington, D.C. over Spring Break. The Grizzlies had a fun-filled jam packed week! Site seeing included the Capitol building, Newseum, Ford's Theater, Arlington National Cemetery, National Archives, Smithsonian museums, National Cathedral, National Zoo, Mount Vernon, and several monuments and memorials. Everyone had a wonderful time and enjoyed getting to experience all that Washington, D.C. had to offer.

RMS Goes to Washington & New York

Russell Middle's trip to Washington D.C. took them to places, like the Capital, with a glimpse of the White House, National Cathedral, Ford Theatre, and many memorials. Students were in awe of the Holocaust Museum. It was eye opening to see the History of those who struggled and who perished. The group was in amazement as they explored the Smithsonian's exhibits from Rockets to Fossils and even Ruby Slippers.

RMS students also went to the City of Dreams....good ole New York City, where once again the h istory astounded the students. This trip included Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty, Federal Hall, Time Square, a Broadway Show, and the top of the Empire State Building. A Rockette from Radio City got the pleasure of meeting the Dogpack, and explaining what it takes to be a Rockette. On this venture, students were honored to see Ground Zero from 9/11. A beautiful tribute to all those whose lives were lost, but not forgotten. This was a trip that will last a lifetime!

BCSS Student STEAM Showcase
