State of the Practice  ||  January 2018

Thank you for your continued confidence and support!

As we close the book on 2017, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on some of this past year's major events and forecast some happenings in 2018. As horse owners, we are all in this together -- and keeping you involved in our practice makes this more like a big family endeavor to me.

WWhatWeDidIn2017hat We Did in 2017:
1. Voted "Best Veterinarians" in Northern Virginia Magazine
Both Dr. Hyman and I were independently selected into this distinct group.

2. PATH International Veterinarian of the Year - Region 3
I was nominated by our very own Loudoun Therapeutic Riding and selected from many Mid-Atlantic region veterinarians for this honor. Thank you LTR for the nomination, and PATH (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship) for this selection.
3. Humanitarian Emergency Vet Mission to Vieques, Puerto Rico
In response to Hurricane Maria, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) asked that I go to Vieques to assist in the rescue and evacuation efforts of horses, dogs, and cats. For 9 days, our 3-person team treated several hundred animals, delivered tons of pet food, and evacuated hundreds of animals to mainland USA. It was quite the rugged adventure but with great support at home and at TEVA, I was able to volunteer during this critical period.

4. Continuing Education
Staying at the forefront of veterinary education and modern techniques is very important to Dr. Hyman and me. Board certified Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. Hyman attended a multi-day conference on updates to the management of endocrine diseases like Cushings and IR, Lyme disease, nutrition and eye emergencies. I attended an intensive hands-on lameness seminar at Colorado State University on advanced issues with the stifle and proximal hind suspensory.
5. Cindy Joined the Team
In addition to Verna, we now have another Customer Care Specialist to assist you in all-things-equine. Welcome Cindy! Verna and Cindy are standing by to help with everything from appointments, payments, and medical records, to labs and general questions. We strive to provide you with the best customer service experience possible and our team prides themselves on making it happen for you.
6. Polo at Morven Park
In its Inaugural Season, many of us enjoyed a relaxed evening watching this exciting sport and having a nice picnic. TEVA had the opportunity to hold a tailgate spot for the season and again has it for the 2018 season. While all TEVA clients are welcome to come hang out with us and say hello, we were able to give the spot to a few folks throughout the season. Let us know if you're interested in using the TEVA spot during the next season and maybe we can make it happen.
7. Vet for the Middleburg Classic Horseshow
Being the vet for this world championship "AA" rated hunter competition was quite an honor. We look forward to serving next year and for years to come.

8. Charitable Contributions
TEVA serves several local equine nonprofit facilities, and as we close the accounting books, TEVA's contributions of money, medications, and services donated or discounted to these groups exceeds $15,000. TEVA gives back and we are proud to serve these organizations and the community.
9. Cutting-edge Technology Leaders
TEVA remains the only Loudoun-based ambulatory practice to offer mobile Gastroscopy. Diagnosing gastric ulcers on your farm is super convenient and definitive. Additionally, this year, we offered rentable therapeutic lasers and ultrasounds for affordable daily rehabilitation administered by you to ensure the best possible recovery.
10. Launched our Referral Program
We know the best referrals come directly from you to your friends! We truly appreciate your positive support. Like you may have already benefited, account credits and TEVA logo gear are the rewards. You refer, and we track and reward you. Win-Win. Read more about our Program Here.
11. And lastly, sadly, my beloved Navy football lost to Army
Already looking forward to 2018's game (seen on Route 15 North).
What's Coming in 2018?
1. New Vet Coming!!
We hired a vet to arrive in April. She is awesome, a surgeon, and several years out of school. TEVA's mission to provide you experienced and client-focused vets remains my promise to you. More info to follow about her in the spring.
2. Revised Payment Plan - Return Your Form Today!
Based on years of client feedback, effective January 1, we decided to initiate an auto-run credit card policy. There are 3 options available. We will ask all of you to sign a revised policy agreement throughout the year. View and download it here.
3. Equinosis Q Lameness Locator Certification
Simply the best, most efficient, and most accurate device to detect and isolate lameness, we love our EL2 Lameness Locator systems. So over the holidays, I completed a formal certification program to get into the nitty gritty of the programming to optimize its use. Now I'm an Equinosis Certified Practitioner.
4. More Vet Education
Dr. Hyman will be traveling to a very prestigious, limited attendance, hands-on workshop that focuses on ultrasound-guided techniques such as backs and necks. As more minimally invasive techniques are being discovered, Dr. Hyman is right there, learning and bringing it to you.
5. Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in Columbia in July 2018
Look for me to attend the games as a team veterinarian.  We will chronicle the adventure and our team's progress and challenges throughout.
6. SAVE MONEY! Shop for Services and Medications on Our Website
TEVA remains the only vet practice that we know that allows services to be purchased online ahead of an appointment. Pre-purchased services save you an average of 10%! Visit us online for the convenience of 24/7 ordering and discounted bundled packages. Shop for Services  |  Order Meds Refills
7. TEVA Ambulance Services
TEVA has a proper equine ambulance. Purpose-built and equipped for emergencies, this rig has it all- winch and sled, side and rear walk-up ramps, 150-gallon water tank/pump and cooling hoses, splints, bandages, electric generator, and more. Staffed and available for horse show support; and new in 2018, it will be available for your emergencies. We are hiring a team of drivers/responders to assist in emergency transport from your farm to the equine hospital. Look for updates and let us know if you're interested in joining our Emergency Transport Team schedule.
8. Cryosurgery
More Tech Services: Dr. Hyman and I are now able to perform more routine cryosurgery on the farm. We have an effective liquid nitrogen system for the treatment/removal of lumps and bumps. Small skin tumors and sarcoids are our primary targets. This new portable pressurized can technology does not require the usual logistical hassle associated with liquid nitrogen tanks and coolers that have made this a difficult option for mobile practitioners in the past.
9. Education Seminars
We believe in client education! 8 years of annual seminars, we have scheduled seminars in January, February, and March. Click here for details, and also look for 1 or 2 Summertime Interactive Workshops in July and August.
Thank you for your continued support and confidence. We're proud of what we have done, and we're excited about what we bring to you and your horses. We are working our hardest to provide the best veterinary care and highest level of customer service from the moment you call to long after the appointment is complete. And as always, we welcome your candid feedback to help us improve and serve you better. Together, we can continue our progress and evolve to become the gold standard to which all veterinary practices strive.

Sincerely wishing you, your family, and horses a happy and healthy 2018!

Dr. Jay Joyce
