Principal's Message
Dear Loyola Family,

Since I started at Loyola Catholic School on June 15 th , 2017 I have had the chance to speak to quite a few people about the mission of Loyola. This includes faculty, staff, our stakeholders, and people outside of Loyola. I've had numerous people approach me about the mission of Loyola. Here are some of the most common points or questions brought up by others:
Service is the mission of Loyola.
Faith is the mission of Loyola.
Our mission statement is too long. It should be shorter.
It should be short enough and easy enough for our youngest students to recite.
What is our mission? What is our mission statement? Do we even have one?
How can you/we make decisions if our mission isn't defined?
We have always had a mission at Loyola, but how we speak to it, that is the problem.
I love the mission of Loyola!
Without a well-defined mission you are all just spinning in circles, not connected and not working together.

I have often thought some of these same points, as there is probably some truth to each of them at times. For those of you who have gotten to know me I am a big believer in the mission of an organization, and truly believe we need to focus on ours to continue to guide us into the future.

So, over the past six to nine months we have been talking about and working on the mission of Loyola. This includes work sessions among our faculty and staff, sessions amongst our school board of trustees and our academic and activities committee. We looked at a lot of other mission statements from other schools of all types, other non-profit organizations and analyzed them.  People have brought us good examples of high-functioning organizations across the country, including some high performing schools who live through their mission. Throughout the sessions and talks common themes kept popping up. Our faith, our service, our leadership, our academics, and a need for love.  Those involved continually spoke to those main points. We've had many talented and knowledgeable people look at our drafts and give their insight.

What it has come back to is this: We have four main pillars here at Loyola, and are a part of our logo. Faith, Service, Academic Excellence, and Leadership. Those four pillars are on our letterhead and are a part of our communications. So, why not focus on those? As we have simplified our mission with a goal of under ten words, we have narrowed it down with a focus on our four pillars. Please attend our State of the School Address on Thursday, January 18th at 7pm in our Chapel as a part of our presentation will be the mission of Loyola. I hope to see you there! As a reminder, we welcome you to submit your questions prior to the meeting. Click here to access the form.

Thank you for your partnership!

NWEA TESTING
The following are the days Grades 7-12 will be testing:
Tuesday, January 16, 2018 -- Math
Wednesday, January 17, 2018 -- LA
Thursday, January 18, 2018 -- Reading

Congrats to the Juniors, (Class of 2019) for having 85% of their class show up on a Saturday morning with a -10 degree temperature to take a full practice ACT test.  Impressive!  Way to go!  The results will be used to do extra ACT preparation when the seniors are on retreat.

Juniors:  Registration deadline for the February ACT is Friday, Jan. 12th (rather than Jan. 5th).  In general, each junior who is planning on a 4 year college and hasn't taken the ACT yet should sign up for the February test.

Juniors:  Friday, Jan. 26th will be a good day to either visit colleges or attend the Zap the ACT workshop offered by Community Services as you do not have school that day. You can sign up for the Zap the ACT workshop at www.mankatocer.com

Seniors:  The Dollars for Scholars local website is now open.  Go to http://mankatoarea.dollarsforscholars.org to apply.  They give over 25 local scholarships ranging from $500-$1000.  Anyone who has at least a 2.5 GPA and over 40 hours of community service should apply as it is a lottery once the student has those 2 criteria.  There will also be two $1000 scholarships for Loyola students who attend SCC!!  In addition, there are academic scholarships.  ANY SENIOR WHO IS AT ALL INTERESTED IN SCHOLARSHIP MONEY SHOULD APPLY FOR THIS SCHOLARSHIP.   Important tip concerning the application:  Under "Add an Activity",  choose "volunteer work" or "volunteer church work" (it is listed alphabetically) rather than "community service" or "church/religious" to list your volunteer work.  If you have done it correctly, at the end it will ask you for your grand total # of volunteer hours.  After you put the total in, be sure to hit the "submit app" button.

SENIORS: There are copies of the Kiwanis scholarship application on Mrs. Arians' door by the scholarship newsletters.  This scholarship awards three $2000.00 scholarships!  It is due Jan.15th.  The criteria emphasizes community service and servant leadership. It requires a recommendation so be sure to ask a teacher soon if you need one. We have numerous outstanding candidates for these scholarships!
