Hot holidays: ideal reading weather

Our Piccabeen Bookshop is open again from Monday 15th January. Why not browse amongst our stocks for a good book to while away a hot afternoon?

The funds generated by this shop are crucial in supporting our work financially. Our volunteer staff are very friendly: do drop in to say hello and buy a book or two.

As our young 2018 gets onto its feet (somewhat reluctantly, in the current heat!) our Landcare volunteers are getting back into Landcare activities, weeding and planting, volunteering in our Piccabeen Bookshop, or carrying out subcommittee and administrative duties.

If you've got spare time this year, perhaps consider joining our keen volunteers. If you think you could help in some way, please contact our president, Judith Roland, on 0429 808 206.

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) and Beechmont Landcare volunteers will be planting 300 trees at Rankin's Paddock, Binna Burra, on 3rd February.

TM Landcare volunteers will also be pitching in, and we'd be delighted if you could join us for a day (or just a morning) of planting amongst friendly companions. There will be jobs for people of all ages and physical abilities.

When: Saturday 3rd February, 8am-2pm (or whenever you can lend a hand, for as long as you're able)

Where: Park at Visitor Information Centre carpark or on the edge of Binna Burra Road and walk down to Rankin's Paddock. QPWS will direct people from the entry gate to Rankin's Paddock off Binna Burra Road.

What to bring:
  • protective clothing (long sleeved shirt and trousers)
  • hat and sunscreen
  • insect repellent (for protection against ticks)
  • drinking water and a cup or mug (hot water, tea and coffee will be supplied)
  • morning tea and lunch
  • plenty of enthusiasm for a good cause!

Since our organisation's beginnings in 2003, we've achieved a great deal towards fulfilling our objectives:
  • to protect the natural heritage values of Tamborine Mountain by maintaining and enhancing the environment, diversity and productivity of both the plateau and escarpment for the benefit of residents, the region, the State of Queensland and the nation
  • to undertake and encourage the preservation of
    • areas that are significant for natural and cultural heritage or scenic amenity
    • wildlife habitat and native vegetation
  • to foster co-operation between land users, including government agencies, wherever action is needed to control land degradation
  • to promote community awareness of Tamborine Mountain's environmental issues and its natural values
This year we'll continue to build on and extend this good work.

During the year we'll mark this anniversary with a celebratory event. We hope you'll be able to join us in acknowledging the wonderful work our volunteers have contributed and the substantial results of their efforts over the years. Information about this event will follow in a later Newsflash.
