Gearing Up for Redistricting Reform:
Signature Collection and More
League of Women Voters of Greater Cleveland is gearing up to push for redistricting reform

To LWVGC members and friends,

The first step to redistricting reform is collecting enough signatures to get the proposal on the ballot. We need 300,000 good signatures across Ohio, which means collecting 600,000 to assure enough good signatures.

The first step in that process is getting the ballot language approved by the Ohio Attorney General and then by the ballot board. This has been initiated and we are currently awaiting the AG's review. Hopefully (fingers crossed), we will have approved ballot language and printed petitions ready to be circulated within a few weeks. For this we are beginning to organize:
  • Training sessions for both how to collect signatures and how to present the Fair Districts proposal to voters.
  • Staging locations - places for petition pick-up, drop-off, and on-the-spot petition training. These locations, which can be homes, will be located throughout Cuyahoga County and will include the LWVGC office at 2800 Euclid Avenue in the Campus District. Parking is available.
  • Petition circulation: we need to identify good locations for this activity and assign volunteers.
While LWVGC's focus is on Cuyahoga County, there will be overlap with other counties. Each petition can have signatures from only one county, so volunteers working near county lines and at events and locations that attract people form multiple counties will need to carry petitions for more than one county. We expect to collaborate with those working neighboring counties.

Even if you have already signed up to volunteer, either through the League or the Fair Districts website, we are asking you to contact us again to let us know:
  • Are you willing to collect signatures and where (i.e., in what community)? You will be trained for this. ________
  • If you live near the county line, are you willing to collect signatures for more than one county? ________ If so, which counties? _________
  • Are you willing to learn how to be a speaker to present the Fair Districts proposal? _______
  • Are you willing to learn how to be a trainer for signature collection? ______
  • Are you willing to help staff a staging location at the LWVGC office or other place? ________
  • Are you willing to offer your home or work place (if permitted) as a staging location? ________
  • Are you willing to coordinate volunteers in your city or community?_____
Please email your responses (you can forward this email and insert your answers next to the questions above) to  lwvgc4fairdistricts@gmail.com

We will contact you to work out details of times, locations, etc. Also, l et us know if you have any questions.
