Rector's Ramblings

How are we supposed to care for poor people? I can find few Christians who would argue against helping the poor at all, yet there is plenty of debate about the best way and who should do the helping. In general though, we seem to agree that we should do something to help, no matter what your formulation of "we" means. And I think I know why.

Our motivation to help is no doubt informed by the clarity of scripture on this matter: "Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.' "They also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?' "He will reply, 'Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.'" (Matthew 25)  Eternal fire gets results.

Graduate Recognition Sunday

On Sunday, May 21st, we recognized our graduating high school seniors for 2017 during worship. We wish Wil Brown, Maggie Holt, Jack Parker (who could not be present) and Sam Thomas all the very best, as they move on to higher education in the fall!

Busy Bags Are Here!
Busy bags are now available for your young children to enjoy during our Sunday services. Just pick up a bag from the basket in the church, let your children explore the contents and return the bag at the end of the service.

ECW Makes Grants to Local Charities:
A Note from ECW President, Jane Watson

Dear Christ Church and The Golden Isles Community,

It with great excitement that your ECW announces a very generous gift of over $60,000 to more than 25 local and regional charities! These gifts come from combined proceeds of the 64th annual Tour of Homes this past March, as well as the year-long sales of the Christ Church cookbook.

What a joy it is to be able to grant such a large amount to so many deserving charities in our area that benefit women and children. This is a gift from our entire community because of the community-wide support of our two large projects each year. It takes more than 400 volunteers to to put on a huge project like the Tour of Homes and we send out a huge THANK YOU to the many community volunteers who help us with both projects each year. We want the community to know that this is their gift as well. Lives will be touched thanks to your time and efforts.

Congratulations, and well done...for the many hours of volunteering, planning and dedication...our community is the winner.

In His Service,
Jane Watson
ECW President

Help Us Recognize the Street Beat Graduates of 2017
This year there are nine graduates from Safe Harbor's Street Beat program and we're excited that they will be going on to college, the military and technical school!  Anyone wanting to help celebrate these kids can do so by giving them graduation cards. If you'd like to  include a little something in the graduation cards, g ift cards from Walmart or Target would be most useful.  You may drop off graduation cards at the church office in the Parish House.

Here is the list of this year's graduates:

- Brendon Tate (boy)- College of Coastal Georgia
Raneisha Beard (girl) - CCGA Nursing Program
Mykeria Williams(girl) - Armstrong State University
- Akia McCall (girl) - College of Coastal Georgia
- Ra'Nesha Pinkney (girl) - College of Coastal Georgia
- Tradeja Johnson (girl) - Cosmetology School
- Quiana Johnson (girl) - College of Coastal Georgia
- Tamara Howard (girl) - Military
- Jada Houston (girl) - Military

To those of you who have already brought in graduation cards and/or contributed for the Street Beat high school graduates, THANK YOU!! Gift certificates for all were purchased at Walmart so they can get some of the things they need for college, the military, or technical school. And the parish's generosity enabled us to get gift certificates for all eight girls at Ulta Beauty, and a gift card from Dick's Sporting Goods for the young man, who plays Coastal Outreach Soccer. They appreciate your kindness more than you will ever know!

Books Needed for Summer Reading Program
GEM (Glynn Episcopal Ministries) needs your help with our weekly summer reading and  meal pack program at St. Athanasius. We are collecting new and gently used books for the children who visit to read and take home, along with the food packs we provide. Right now, the supply of books is extremely low, so we're asking all who can, to please donate any new or gently used children's books to help build our library. Books may be dropped off at the church office in the Parish House at Christ Church.  For questions and information about signing up to help with this outreach, please contact Becky Matthews at 912-268-2689.

Help Our Friends at Hello Goodbuy: Take a Survey

The Christ Church Backpack Buddies program has been the recipient of a grant from the Hello Goodbuy Thrift Store, which we have used to purchase food for the bags we provide to Safe Harbor's Street Beat kids. Hello Goodbuy also recently awarded us a grant for year round (including summer) weekend food bags for these kids.

Hello Goodbuy is now conducting a survey of Glynn County Shoppers and has asked for our help. Since Hello Goodbuy is supportive of the backpack program at Christ Church, and other worthwhile efforts, they hope to get some candid feedback from this constituency! It will only take you 5-10 minutes to fill out the survey located here. Responses are anonymous. Please feel free to share/forward to other friends, church members, or neighbors. Thank you in advance for taking the survey and helping them out!

Click here to go directly to the HelloGoodbuy webpage and learn more about this valuable support and outreach, non-profit program.
