As we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his commitment to nonviolence, we explore what peace requires of us. Even when we are aware of the cost of violence, it is easy to ignore the cost of peace. What does it mean to be a people of peace, amidst the crisis of injustice? (This service includes a baby dedication as well as a special offering to benefit Black Lives of Unitarian Univeralism.)

THIS WEEK AT ALBANY UU
Mindfulness Meditation Workshop
This meditation training and practice workshop will be led by Rev. Trumbore, on
Friday, Jan. 12, 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, and Saturday, Jan. 13, 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. It gives participants an opportunity to learn Buddhist mindfulness meditation techniques and/or refresh and deepen their meditation practice. All are welcome from first timers to experts. There will be a vegan potluck lunch on Saturday and all are encouraged to bring something to share. (A voluntary donation can be offered at the end) Register by sending an email to

Black Lives of Unitarian Universalism: Special Collection This Sunday
The Promise and Practice of Our Faith campaign is an opportunity for UUs to address broken promises and white supremacy culture within Unitarian Universalism.
This Sunday we will take up a special collection, in support of this campaign and the UUA Board's commitment of $5.3 million in funding for Black Lives of Unitarian Universalism (BLUU).
Your gift will be multiplied! Several committed Albany UUs have already pledged to match Sunday's contributions one for one, up to a total of $4000. On top of this, our congregational contribution will be matched by donors to the UUA. Please make a generous contribution to this historic effort. Make your check payable to Albany UU and put "BLUU" in the memo line.

Emerson Name Change
The Board of Trustees has resolved to rename Emerson Community Hall and to establish a joint committee of Board and Inclusivity Team members to create a process for doing so. In the interim, the Board plans to refer to it as Community Hall. The congregation is invited to do the same, as so inclined.
This discernment process inspired much thoughtful discourse, and we are appreciative of the congregational feedback we received. As we look forward to a new name for our community hall that is more welcoming and better communicates our UU principles, we also look forward to devising a way to honor Emerson's contribution to Unitarianism and Transcendentalism, and which explains our decision to rename our hall.
Walker Book Group
Join the Walker Book Group for a potluck and discussion on Sunday, Jan. 14 at 5:30 pm in Channing Hall. Bring your favorite dish to share and a small contribution to cover beverages. We will discuss History of Wolves by Emily Fridlund.

Martin Luther King Jr Celebration

At Metropolitan Baptist Church
This annual interfaith gathering will include prayer, music and remembrance of MLK. Keynote speakers this year are the Reverend Kaia Greer and Dr. Shai Brown Butler, Vice President at The College of Saint Rose.
The offering proceeds will go to the Martin Luther King Scholarship which is awarded each year to a graduating college-bound senior. Even though it might feel a bit warmer, the weather promises more cold in the very near future. Please gather any extra blankets, sleeping bags, warm coats, etc. for those who are homeless and put them in the bin in the coatroom. Thanks for helping.

Getting to Know UU
We invite you to join us
Saturday, Feb. 3 for "Getting to Know UU". This orientation for newcomers is from
8:45 a.m. to noon.
We'll start with coffee and snacks and getting to know each other. You'll learn about Unitarian Universalism and about our congregation, and you'll get a chance to ask all the questions you've been collecting. We'll talk about how to get involved in the Albany UU community and about becoming a member. All in all, it's a fun morning of conversation and fellowship, and a pleasant first step on the path to membership!

Sending Out HUUGs
We're gathering donations for packages for our fledgling young adults.
Whether they are now working or volunteering, serving in the military or in college, those who have recently left senior high group so appreciate a package with notes and goodies from us at Albany UU!
Please bring donations to the bin in the Work Room (where the photocopier is) by Sunday, Feb. 4 in the morning. We are assembling the boxes that morning.

Openings for RE volunteers - Winter/Spring 2018 (Feb through May)
We have a few openings in our Sunday morning programming for children and our youth program. Each position requires an application to be reviewed by Leah Purcell and the Religious Education Council.
Nursery/Toddler room: Volunteer in the happiest room on Sunday mornings with our paid staff worker, Aaliah Francis.
Team member for the Blue Group (3rd/4th grade). Work with experienced team members to facilitate sessions from the curriculum or that Leah prepares.
Congregational Conversations on creating a Congregational Covenant
For the last 15 months, at the direction of the Board of Trustees, the Congregational Covenant Planning Team and its successor the Congregational Covenant Team (CCT) have been working behind the scenes to craft a process for creating this congregation's first ever congregational covenant. The Team is "going live," starting this month, with a series of three congregational conversations. All members of our community will have the opportunity to come and voice their preferences as to what they would like to see in our congregational covenant.

Planning for weather emergencies
Rarely do services or activities cancel due to weather, but if the need arises, there is a plan in place.
A decision to cancel RE classes will be publicized by
9:00 PM Saturday.
A decision to cancel Sunday meditation and the service will be publicized by 8:00 AM Sunday.
The cancellation of all other classes, programs and meetings depends on a decision by the chairperson. We hope to receive information enabling a cancellation announcement two hours before the event start time.

Keep up with what's happening for children and families and other events by visiting
Nursery/Toddler Room opens - starting at 9:45, both Sundays
For the faith development of the children and youth this week
We continue our special January program this year for children in Pre-k through
6
th
grade and Senior High. We'll explore ways to using our inner voices to
notice and to talk about race.
This Sunday children in pre-k through 6th
grade will attend the service in the Community Hall starting at 10:00. After the story, then the children will go to their groups. We'll have mixed age
groupings.
Red Group (pre-k) will meet on their own in their room
Yellow and Orange Groups (K-2nd grade) will meet in the Orange Group room
(26 upstairs)
Blue, Indigo and Violet Groups (3rd-6th grade) will meet together in the Blue
Group Room (B-3/4 downstairs)
7th/8th grade O.W.L. will meet at 10:00 in room B-7
High School youth will attend the service in the Community Hall with their families starting at 10:00 until after the meditation. Then they will meet in their room for special programming.
