New Chief Planning and Finance Officer named

CEO Jerry Forte recently announced our new Chief Financial Officer: Tamela Monroe. Her first day is Monday, Jan. 29, 2018.

Formerly of Omaha Public Power District, Monroe has more than 30 years of utilities experience, including closing aging coal plants, working with regional transmission organizations and in economic development.

"I am very excited to be a part of the Colorado Springs Utilities team," said Monroe. "I look forward to joining the organization with a focus on providing safe, reliable and competitively-priced utility services."
Transmission project to provide more energy options

Recently, our Utilities Board decided to accelerate an essential transmission project that will provide our city with access to more energy options in the future.

This project will also allow us to decommission the Martin Drake and Birdsall power plants, both located inside the city. Options to replace the power these facilities produce include new generation outside the city or importing it from neighboring utilities.

We will continue evaluating the decommissioning date of Drake over the next few years. Armed with more information, along with a transmission solution to replace generation from both power plants, we will be able to continue providing safe, reliable and affordable power for our customers.
Calculating your wastewater bill

Like most utilities, we calculate projected wastewater flows by using a formula for all residential customers.

By using the average daily water use during winter months, the calculation is designed to exclude--as much as possible--water used outdoors. To calculate winter period average daily use (ADU's), water meters are read no earlier than Dec. 1 and no later than the last day of February. The difference between the December and February meter reads, divided by the number of days in that period, determines the ADU which is then used to calculate your wastewater bill.

Check out a short video explaining this calculation.
Prep your landscape for spring with winter watering

Winter watering gives your lawn and landscape plants a better chance of greening up in the spring.

Water one to two times per month at mid-day, from November to April, when the temperature is above 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

To water, use a hose-end sprinkler or watering wand and water slowly so it can soak in. Remove the hose from the spigot after watering to prevent freeze damage. Visit csu.org to get more winter watering tips.
