Au Revoir Sarah!

I am are sad to inform you that Sarah Guthrie is leaving Académie Lafayette to pursue other opportunities after three years as our Development Director. Sarah has been a very involved member of our community since the inception of the school. As a parent, she helped create the first school library. Sarah has also been on the AL board, the AL Development Committee, and has worked as a consultant in grant writing.

Please join me in thanking Sarah for her great work and in wishing her a successful experience in her new job. She can be reached at sarahjdg1@gmail.com . A search for a Development Director has been launched and we hope to hire a replacement very soon.

Cold Weather in the New Year

Dear AL families,

Happy New Year and welcome back from winter break! We hope your holidays were snowman_snowy_dec.jpg wonderful and relaxing. The super cold temperatures ensured we had plenty of together time inside☺. As a reminder for inclement weather and the varied temperatures in classrooms, please make sure your student has uniform style sweaters, appropriate sweatshirts (AL only) and proper outerwear for recess. We try to go outside as long as the temperature is above 10 degrees (wind chill). If the wind chill is 0-10 degrees we have a shortened outdoor recess. If we have a snow day you will be notified by School Reach, it will be on our Facebook page, and on the major TV networks.
We also hope that you and  your children are ready to get back to work. During the winter months, students tend to make  huge learning gains and I know our teachers are excited to see the progress for their students. Let's work together to make sure your child takes full advantage of this  learning opportunity by having them at school on time and ready to learn. Let's enjoy the second half of the school year.

Bonne année,
Leslie Houfaidi
Oak Campus Principal

Gifts to the Annual Fund total $192,000 or 71% of our $270,000 goal. This is really great and far ahead of what we have done at this same time in earlier years. Thanks to our donors!

Not surprisingly, parents are the big donors -- 73% of our gifts come from you. But grandparents are hefty donors as well -- 11% of gifts come from them. Thank you for making a difference for every child by giving to the Annual Fund.

Please join our parents, grandparents, staff and others and make a gift to the Annual Fund by clicking here. If you want to see if your employer makes matching gifts, click here. Please help us reach our goal of $270,000!

Annual Report cover The 2016-2017 Annual Reports are in the mail -- thanks to a team of grandmothers, Vicki Riffle, Clare Flemington, Judy Burge, and Karen Kohler, who spent hours stuffing and labeling envelopes. You can read about one of our graduates, Spencer Hardwick, and catch up on the plans for the future of our school.

Tax letters are also in the mail. If you gave a gift to the school in 2017 your letter will arrive next week. If you have a question about your gift, please contact Jessica Wallace at jwallace@academielafayette.org.

Civics Club civicsclub

It's such an interesting time in our country's history. What we know more than anything is that we have to be educated and involved. What better way to do that than to help our children understand how our government works. Beginning  February 6, 2018  we will have Civics Club after school at Oak for middle schoolers 6-8th grade. We will meet once a month. We will be taking 15 kids on a first come, first serve basis. The time is  4:00-5:00  Tuesday, room number TBA. Lessons will be led by parent Jacqui Brewer who is both an educator and has a background in social studies. Parents will need to sign a contract of understanding so that we are all clear what types of topics will be covered. If you are interested please email Leslie Kohlmeyer at lkohlmeyer@academielafayette.org.
