| A Granddaughter's Portrait of a General and President Caps 28th Isaac Symposium
 Presidential granddaughter Mary Jean Eisenhower presented the 2017 Joseph S. Calvaruso Keynote Address on April 20. For more than 20 years, Mary Jean Eisenhower has worked with People to People International (PTPI), a peace-focused organization founded by Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956, during his time as the United States' 34th president. Now serving as the organization's president and CEO, she noted that the idea for PTPI sprang from then-General Eisenhower's role in liberating Nazi camps at the end of World War II.
Mary Jean expressed a quiet passion about her ability to extend her grandfather's legacy as an architect for peace.
"People say you can't create a lasting peace, not now. And I say Well, you have to start somewhere,'" she said. "What I love about my job is that I get to see miracles, small and big, on a day-to-day basis. People are basically extremely good and the people in the newsdon't waste your time on them, because good people are all around you."

 Student's Horse Research Project Making a Lot of Scents
 Kylie Heitman, 17, has been doing aromatherapy research with some of the Albion College horses. Heitman has been a horse lover and rider since she was a young girl, and she has long dealt with the stress many horses experience when their daily routine is interrupted. New venues, loud noises and traveling in trailers can contribute to increased heart rates and increased levels of cortisol in the blood, which can add to stress.
About a year ago, she thought of a research idea. Specifically, she wanted to know if an essential oil, in this case lavender, when diffused into the air could reduce stress in horses by suppressing their heart rates and cortisol levels.
With the help of two grants from the Foundation for Undergraduate Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity and one from Dressage4Kids Inc., as well as receiving permission from the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and advice from the veterinary department at Michigan State University, Heitman set out to see if there was anything to her hypothesis.

Biology's Dale Kennedy Honored by Wilson Ornithological Society  Since arriving at Albion in 1994, the study of house wrens has been a big part of the life of professor Dale Kennedy. Its been a big part of the life of her husband, Albion biologist Doug White, as well.
In fact, since 1995, Kennedy and White have installed nearly 150 nesting boxes for the migratory birds to lay their eggs, and for the couple to conduct research. Located near the College's student farm in the Whitehouse Nature Center, the ongoing work has provided Kennedy and White with valuable information about the birds.
Kennedy's research led her to joining and serving in the Wilson Ornithological Society (WOS), and in March she was awarded the William and Nancy Klamm Service Award at the societys annual meeting in Fort Myers, Florida.
"I was stunned," Kennedy said when she learned she had won the award, which has been presented annually by the organization since 2007. "It's just been a great honor to be involved."
