Saturday Gardening Series 2018
Please join us for SGS 2018. With two full days of informative gardening presentations, the Saturday Gardening Series is a sure harbinger of Spring.
The cost is $60 for both days or $37.50 for one day. There will be coffee, tea and nibbles in the morning and lunch from TLC Catering/Fairlawn.

Jeff Griff is the 3rd generation owner and President of Lowe’s Greenhouse and Gift Shop in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, which has been serving the Chagrin Valley since 1926. Lowe’s has been selected by Today’s Garden Center Magazine as one of our nation's most “Revolutionary Garden Centers” for eight straight years, and has received numerous awards for its innovation. Jeff travels extensively to study current best practices in the areas of garden design, greenhouse production techniques, and garden center and landscape business management and has published his first book “Go Play in the Dirt”. In his “spare time” he enjoys photography, skiing, cycling, traveling, and of course, gardening.
Jeff will share his 40 years of experience with us in his presentation “Edibles in the Landscape: Merging the Bounty of the Table with the Beauty of Your Yard”. Incorporating edibles in the landscape is one of the hottest trends in gardening today. We will discuss the many elements necessary to be successful adding edibles to the landscape including elements of design, cultivation practices and plant selection.
Amanda will inspire us with her presentation "Composting: To Rot or Not?" Have you heard all the rules about composting? Are you intimidated? Who wouldn't be! We will discuss the why and how of composting and get you ready to start composting, or to UP your composting game by rotting more than ever!
Randy Mitchell is a Professor of Biology at the University of Akron, and Director of the University of Akron Field Station. Dr. Mitchell grew up loving science, the outdoors, backpacking, and insects. He has done research in many wonderful places, including Colorado’s Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory, California’s deserts and mountains and scrub, Adelaide Australia, New Mexico’s mountains and deserts, Wisconsin’s wetlands, and the wonderful Cuyahoga Valley. Dr. Mitchell’s research focuses on the ecology of plant-pollinator interactions.
Randy will present on “The Status of Bumblebees in Ohio”. Nineteen species of bumblebee are historically known from Ohio, but only about 10 of them are now frequent. Some were never common here, but several once-abundant species are now in steep decline. Indeed, two species are in danger of becoming extinct, not only in our state, but also globally. There are many causes for these declines; however, good habitat management can help them recover in some cases. Randy will help us understand how to identify these bees and create habitat for them.
Denny Reiser is a retired schoolteacher who has always had a love for nature, Ohio, history, traveling and photography. Since retirement in 1999 from Aurora Middle School, Denny has served as a seasonal part time ranger in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and a school group guide for the Summit Metro Parks and the Cascade Lock Park Association. His photographs have appeared in Cuyahoga Valley National Park Publications, Summit County Metro Parks Publications and several books. He has also contributed over 1000 photos to the Ohio Historical Society website www.remarkableohio.com. In recent years, Denny’s photography interest has shifted to Ohio pollinators and wildflowers, which dovetails with his deep concern for the environment.
Denny will share photos and tips for taking your own in his presentation “Waterfalls and Wildflowers”. We will travel our beautiful state and her neighbors to view spectacular waterfalls and wildflowers. Methods of identifying and photographing wildflowers and the pollinators that visit them will be shared. Relax and enjoy the beauty around us!
Bev Shaffer is a chef, cooking school instructor and author specializing in recipe development and recipe testing. Bev is the award-winning author of six cookbooks, editor of many more, and has been a newspaper columnist and television and radio show host, among other accomplishments. While her Double Chocolate Raspberry Tart was featured in Chocolatier magazine and she boasts numerous “chocolate credentials”, she also has an interest in healthy cooking, having presented healthy cooking classes for two cancer recovery centers and many local hospitals. Bev will present “Culinary Magic: Creative Uses for Leafy Greens and Fresh Herbs”. If your idea of being creative with fresh leafy greens and herbs is using them for salads, or if they never get past wilting in your refrigerator, join in this culinary journey. A greens and herbs cooking overview will be shared, along with tips and tricks to calm your food phobias. Don’t miss this delicious way to start the day!
Jacqueline Kowalski is the ANR Extension Educator for Summit County, OH (Akron) and was previously in Cuyahoga County (Cleveland). Her Extension programs support diverse clientele needs in a mixed urban-suburban county: urban and small specialty crop farms, consumer and commercial horticulture and Master Gardeners. Her career has focused on assisting new and beginning farmers from underserved populations and her goal is to bring Extension resources to her community to support food systems of all sizes.
Jacqueline will present "Great Things Come in Small Packages! Miniature Vegetables for your Garden". As the interest in container and small space gardening has grown, so has the interest in miniature vegetables. This presentation will discuss growing requirements, production practices, and variety selection (both new and heirloom) of miniature vegetables that will add appeal to your plate.
Celine Hallier is an Ohio native and active garden club member, who maintains consultant status in Gardening, Landscape Design and Environmental Studies in addition to being a Flower Show judge. As Garden Club of Ohio Canton District Director from 2011 – 2013, she became interested in the art of flower design. Celine attended Flower Show School to understand the creativity and mechanics needed to fashion beautiful, balanced floral arrangements. Celine lives on a farm with her husband and a couple of goats. She enjoys antiques, camping, sewing and machine embroidery.
In Celine's presentation "Sisterhood of the Travelling Plants", she will share with us a series of floral designs that illustrate her narrated story of a little girl’s journey through life, demonstrating that flowers can be our constant companions.
Jeanne Poremski is a long time Master Gardener Volunteer in Stark and Summit Counties. Jeanne transferred from Pittsburgh, PA, where she earned a Certificate in Horticulture and began her business as a landscape gardener. She has earned all of the statewide MG Specialization in Ohio including Backyard and Local Foods, Weeds, and Power of Pollinators and puts them to work in a three season long MG vegetable growing project in Summit Co. Her main interest is field botany and she also volunteers in the field and lab for the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.
Jeanne will present on "Bulbs for the Seasons". Creating interest in the garden year round is a goal for many gardeners. Jeanne will help us do this with new and tried-and-true bulbs that we can tuck in amongst the perennials and annuals.
