Special Photo Edition - Dedication of "Casa Betesda"

"What God wants to accomplish --- He will!"
I n May of last year, j ust after we inaugurated our new worship place in Santiago (April) , Lutheran World Relief offered a grant for us to begin construction on a rehab center for young adults with severe handicaps. The rehab center was in our long-term plans, but God wanted it done sooner! This new building at the back of our church property would also have a kitchen, bathrooms and Sunday school rooms which our church would use. Well, it seemed like a huge undertaking, BUT, not for our Awesome God!  In August 2016, the work began...look what has happened since then!
The space behind a little shack and fig tree on our property was designated...
Discussing the possibility of building the Casa Betesda rehab center.
Photo taken from nearly the same spot during the dedication ceremony.

Church member, Arturo, became the General Contractor, using  U his knowledge of everything from bricks to plumbing to guide the RAPID construction of our "Casa Betesda"...

Work in front of the church includes putting in the water and sewage pipes and even a new security gate...
Pouring foundation for the security fence.
Security fence nearly complete.
Installing an underground water tank.

And our 2 pastors, Cristian and Jim, are always shoulder to shoulder with the physical labor as well...

These last few weeks we've been hurrying to finish for the dedication of "Casa Betesda" - House of Mercy.

And....on Sunday, May 21, it happened!  About 100 people were in attendance for this special day of activities.

We began in the patio area in front of the center with folk music provided by a group of musicians with a variety of physical disabilities.  The music was beautiful!
When we've wondered if we're moving too fast, God has introduced us to professionals who are willing to work in the therapy with our future "students".  He provides us with businesses and individuals who want to give towards a scholarship program that will assist in the costs of the school; with permits and supplies that normally take "ages" to acquire; with people like YOU who pray for it all to happen!

Have you ever cried out to God, "Why me, Lord?" I think we all have at one time or another, when it seems like our cross is too heavy or our burden is unfair. Our coworkers here in Chile, Cristian and Ethel Rautenberg, have two sons, both of whom have a form of cerebral palsy. They are developmentally disabled to the extent that they will never be able to live independently.  But I have never heard Cristian or Ethel ask, "Why me?" What I have heard them say is, "This is the family that God gave me." But if they should ever ask, "Why me?", at least a part of the answer is found in the Casa Betesda. If God had not given the Rautenbergs the family that they have, Casa Betesda would never have come into existence.
We ask, "Why?". God says, "Wait and see!"
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, says the Lord.
(Isaiah 55:8)
Prayers and Praise

  • We praise God for the members of "La Cruz de Cristo" Lutheran Church here in Santiago that have been working tirelessly on the rehab center.
  • We pray for God's guidance in the process of opening Casa Betesda for students in August.
  • We thank God for Lutheran World Relief and many individuals, both in Chile and the US, who have supported the construction of Casa Betesda financially.
  • Pray that God would direct us to the people to help with purchasing furniture, materials and all the other details that are needed at this center for severely disabled young adults.
  • We praise the Lord for Ben's graduation from college and ask for His direction as to Ben's next steps towards a career.  (He's praying about mission work!)
  • Pray for us as we search for an outreach center to rent in the downtown area of Santiago.  We feel God calling us to open another mission post where we can reach the immigrant population and others in the center of this big city.
