January 2018
Volume 8, Issue 3

Greetings!

The Asian American Health Initiative (AAHI) hopes that you had a warm and safe holiday season! To kick off the new year, AAHI would like to highlight some exciting updates that 2018 has in store for us.

All in all, it has been an exciting fall filled with health fairs and cultural activities and we look forward to seeing both new and familiar faces in the community! Remember to keep up with the latest news at AAHI by following us on social media! You can find us on AAHI's blog , Facebook , and Twitter
Mental Health Toolkit Now Available

Download the complete toolkit, including a Powerpoint presentation, resources, tips, and instructions from AAHI's Resource Library.

We are excited to share with you AAHI's first Mental Health Toolkit: Staying Well & Living Fully This toolkit provides culturally competent, relevant, and timely information about mental health to spread awareness and help foster dialogue around mental health in Asian American communities.

The toolkit is now available for download on our website  and is intended to be used by any community leader or member interested in the topic; no medical, mental health, or social-work background is needed. The toolkit includes a presentation  ready for you to use and  present in various settings, such as at community gatherings, health events, Sunday school meetings, or classrooms.

Staying Well & Living Fully covers many topics related to mental health, such as overall health and wellness, the difference between "mental health" and "mental illness," myths and facts about mental illness, signs and symptoms, and 10 tools for maintaining mental wellness. In addition, we have provided presentation tips and local mental health resources available in Montgomery County.

For AAHI to continue providing quality health resources and tools to the community, we need feedback. We ask that you please take some time to complete and share with us the evaluations included in the toolkit. We value your comments!

We hope that this toolkit will support your efforts in educating your community members about mental health. Please feel free to reach out to us if you would like further support in raising awareness around mental health in your community.
Make to Most Out of Your Coverage

The general enrollment period for 2018 health and dental plans ended in December 2017. Now that you have health coverage, here are ways for you to connect with primary care and preventive services so that you can live a long and healthy life!

Insurance plans can differ depending on the providers you see and how much you have to pay. You will pay the lowest costs for services when you see a doctor or provider in your plan's network. Call your doctor's office, check with your insurance company, or search for a doctor using this search tool from the Maryland Health Connection .

Vaccinations, screenings, and checkups may be available to you at no cost, including doctor visits, immunization vaccines, blood pressure screening, cholesterol screening, diabetes (Type 2) screening, and mental health care. Carefully review your Summary of Benefits and Coverage in your plan to see what services are covered and what costs may apply for each.
Once you have scheduled an appointment with your doctor, be prepared for you visit! Bring the following documents with you during your appointment: your insurance card, photo ID, a list of medications you are currently taking, and a payment for your copay if you have one. You can ask for a receipt for your records. You may be asked to fill out forms about your health history and medical records, thus it is important to show up early for your visit.

If you are unsure of what to ask the doctor during your visit, check out AAHI's  Good Health In Your Hands booklet which aims to improve communication between community members with their care provider. The booklet includes basic English terms and expressions that will be useful during a doctor's visit in the clinic or hospital. It is available in English, Chinese, Korean, Hindi, and Vietnamese.

Getting Ready for Outreach Season

AAHI has many outreach events planned this spring in preparation for one of our busiest outreach seasons! We will be attending health fairs, cultural festivals, hosting Resource Information Tables and Friends' Corner sessions at both community- and faith-based organizations. You can see our latest activities on our calendar of events.
The upcoming Friends' Corner sessions will be conducted at the Sri Lankan Buddhist Temple and Philippine International Bible Church. We will be focusing on topics related to older people such as transportation, social activities, and other social services offered in Montgomery County. We hope to see you there!

In conjunction with the recent launch of Mental Health Photonovel 3, More Than Just Stress AAHI will be conducting presentations to various youth audiences to introduce the photonovel to them as an educational tool.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our Health Promoters for their dedication and effort in assisting us during outreach activities. This includes conducting health screenings, providing language assistance, and promoting the overall health of their respective communities. Thank you for helping us make a difference in the Asian American community!
Sincerely,
