Living Life from a New Source
Personal Growth Conference

Were we ever supposed to live the Christian life on our own strength?

Bill Loveless will lead this conference on how we are deeply resourced to live the life marked out for us.

CLC News
by Mitzi Hudgins
Yesterday we welcomed our families back to CLC after being off for  three weeks!  The children were so excited to see their friends and teachers, and we are ready to begin our second half of the school year!

In the classrooms the children were learning about all kinds of different things:  colors, transportation, outer space, arctic animals, and winter!  Play and interacting with other children is so important.  Play is a process of practicing and imitating what they see, learning motor skills and coordination, and working through social interactions. We also enjoyed the beautiful day that God made by enjoying the nice weather outside on our playground.

In chapel, the older children learned a little about snowflakes.  We learned they are all different and unique, just like the way that God made each one of us!  May you be blessed this week!
Student Ministry
by Greg Burney

I hope everyone had an amazing Christmas! It was nice to get back to Illinois to see family but we were anxious to get back to Texas weather! HHSM has many great events coming up for students to get plugged into!

This weekend is our Winter Retreat to Great Wolf Lodge. As of today we have 55 students attending! Please keep our retreat in your prayers as we will be presenting the Gospel to the students throughout the weekend. It is not too late to sign up if you have a 7th-12th grader that is interested in joining us!

Coming up in February is our 2nd Annual "Buda Ninja Warrior"! An event where people of all ages get to try to prove that they have what it takes to compete on obstacles themed after the NBC hit show "American Ninja Warrior"!

Over the Hays CISD spring break we will have our annual kid's camp. This year we are going to make it different than the past. Instead of focusing on basketball we will offer a variety of sports and even a dance/black light option for kids to participate in! More info to come soon!

Upcoming HHSM events:
* January 13th-15th - Great Wolf Winter Retreat (sign up at tinyurl.com/hhsmwinter)
* February 9th-10th - Buda Ninja Warrior (budaninja.com)
* March - 12th-16th - Super Sports Camp!
* July 22nd-29th - Snowbird Missions Camp

Elders and Jon Lower
One thing I forgot to mention about Jon Lower in my last column is that he has served as an elder from the start of elder-leadership at Hays Hills six years ago.  In case you are interested, the concept of elder-leadership with congregational governance (as opposed to elder-rule) became clear to me after some post-grad work I did several years ago through seminary.  I realized that having several shepherd-leaders was the biblical model, and better than having just one.

As the pastor at that time, I wanted the accountability and support of mature shepherds.  I asked the church to approve five men as elders based on the biblical qualifications: Jon Lower, Aaron Kahler, Eric Patterson, Neal Blumhagen and me.  If any of these men had not agreed to serve, and especially if two of them had not agreed to serve, we likely could not have started elder-leadership.  I appreciate each one, and those we have added since, for giving their time to meet weekly early in the morning, and for other hours of email and study they do.  Jon has been a very valuable elder-a man with godly wisdom!  He has played a large role in the direction of Hays Hills to this point.

And by the way-I am very happy with my new role as Associate Pastor since last May and very happy with our new lead-pastor Aaron!  God has clearly led us.  Pray that we continue to perceive His will and way for us.

Tonight
New Bible Studies for men and for women begin tonight at 6:45 PM
 in Bldg. E.  See you there!  Also newly-wed Bible Study has moved to Wednesdays and meets tonight BUILDING E! Spread the word!

January 27
Saturday January 27 (9-11:30 AM) Bill Loveless will share his testimony and lead us in the Scriptural principles for living from Christ, not just for Christ.  It's the "Living Life from a New Source" personal growth conference at Hays Hills.  Register here.

LATE RISER?
If you attend the 10:45 contemporary service and have not made it to a 9:30 class, we are starting a new adult class at NOON starting this Sunday, in Bldg. E.  (back parking-lot.)  There is no child care or kids classes for this noon-hour, but older kids and teens are welcome to sit in.  Cameron and Gilda Moore are a great couple to fellowship with around God's word!
Children's Ministry
by Shelley McDaid

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a relaxing Christmas vacation. I'm excited to get Children's Ministry rolling again for 2018.

AWANA begins  tonight at  6:45. We have a new schedule this semester, so check out  hayshills.com/awana for all of the new information. We hope you'll bring your K-5th graders to AWANA while you attend one of the many Bible study offerings at the same time. We'd also love to have more adult helpers in AWANA, so if you are interested in that, contact me. We have a lot of fun  on Wednesday nights!

On Sunday  mornings, we are beginning to study the book of Acts in our Gospel Project curriculum. We have small group classes for K-5th grade during the  9:30  service in Building C and have a large group Children's Worship in Building A during the  10:45  hour (kids are dismissed from the worship service). If you'd like to serve as a leader in one of these areas, let me know. We currently have a couple of needs in the  9:30  hour, and I always welcome extra hands in Children's Worship!

From Pastor Aaron

Hays Hills Baptist Church is sending an additional $50,000 to our Neighbors and the Nations! On Sunday, the congregation overwhelmingly approved the proposal to distribute $50,000 on top of our regularly budgeted funds to five causes: Austin Disaster Relief Network, Central Texas Life Care, the work of the Cathey Family in Turkey, the work of the Placke family among the Ngindo in Tanzania, and the work of Dawa Singye in the Himalayas.

I'm also thrilled to report our Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for 2017 has totaled $26,147.03! I thought we were setting our sights high by aiming at a new record of $15,000 and the Lord moved through you to far exceed what I had imagined.

Our financial office is working diligently to close the books on 2017 and we hope to have final numbers for total giving to our Neighbors and the Nations this evening. We set a goal of giving 20% to our Neighbors and the Nations by 2030 and by God's grace, I believe we may reach that goal in 2017!

Thank you for your generous spirit and heart for our Neighbors and the Nations. I am so encouraged as I watch you give, pray, and go to bring life-changing hope, to an ever-changing people, through the unchanging gospel.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On Sunday, January 21st, at 6pm we'll have our next Members' Meeting. As we gather we'll discussing a number of items:

Proposed appointments to the Administration Committee: Michael McKie and Kyle Sumner.

Proposed appointments to the Budget & Finance Committee: Chris Sweeney and Diane White.

Proposed bylaw change regarding our membership process. Currently, our process as listed in the bulletin includes a visit with one of our elders (we want to know our people and want our people to know us). However, that part of the process isn't clearly articulated in our bylaws as we'd like it to be.

Currently the relevant section reads as follows:

Article 1, section 1 Joining Procedures
In order to join, a person shall indicate his or her intent by coming forward at the end of the service, and/or filling out the response card in any service. Those who have indicated their desire to join by the methods stated, will be contacted.

We'd like to replace the word "contacted" with the following: interviewed by one or more elders to get to know those joining and to ensure agreement on the basics of the faith, the gospel, and the values, vision and mission of the church.

Prayer Updates

Scott and Becky Placke are in Central Texas on furlough from Tanzania. Pray for rest and their encouragement. They'll be sharing with us on April 22nd.
