An Introduction to Participatory Action Research: A hands-on learning event

Learn and apply new approaches to dialogue, action learning and evaluation that work across cultural boundaries.

This one-day workshop introduces practical tools and design concepts to engage people in transforming situations, systems and stakeholder relationships. It is organized around three key questions: 

1. Knowing the Actors: Who are the stakeholders that need to be involved and how can relationships of influence and interests be transformed?
2. Exploring the Problem: What is the core problem that needs to be addressed, and what are the conditions and factors at play? Are there strategic entry points into complex systems?
3. Assessing the Options: What are the possible futures? On what basis can people decide how to proceed? How should progress be assessed?

 By the end of the workshop all participants will have:

• Practiced the use of participatory tools to assess problems, actors, and options;
• Applied tools to their own projects;
• Discussed design and facilitation challenges and ways to manage them.

Originating with the pioneering work of Kurt Lewin, Paulo Friere and Fals Borda, the various formulations of participatory action research (PAR) constitute a robust alternative to positivism’s denial of human agency and justice in the global era.

The Instructor is Dr. Daniel Buckles, co-author of Participatory Action Research: Theory and Methods for Engaged Inquiry (Routledge, 2013). Dr. Buckles is the co-founder of SAS2 Dialogue and Adjunct Professor at Carleton University, with 25 years of experience facilitating evaluation and research in international and Canadian settings.

The fee includes the one-day registration, and a morning health break.
