At Outermost Community Radio, we're proud of our thrift and efficiency. Given our dependence upon the generosity of others, we wouldn't have it any other way. We fix things rather than replace them and figure out how to do what needs to be done with what we've already got. We've replaced bits and pieces; we've rewired this and we've repaired that.

The equipment has served us well for nearly 15 years. It has been running non-stop 24 hours a day as hundreds of volunteers have presented the shows that you know and love. It's survived countless storms and power outages, even outlasting our transmitter tower on Mt. Gilboa in Provincetown.

We're proud of our home on Commercial Street in Provincetown, but its location less than 100 yards from Cape Cod Bay wreaks havoc on electronics. Sand and salt water may be good for the soul - not so much for the circuit boards.

This is where you come in. We're asking everyone in our family to help us replace our aging equipment. Who else do you go to in a time of need? Our Board of Directors, led by President Ira Wood and Chair of the Capital Campaign Tony Pierson, is all in. Our volunteer DJs are doing what they can. We're asking our business members and underwriters to consider what they can do to help. And now we're asking you, dear members and listeners, for your contribution to the effort. With your donation of any amount, it'll be that much closer to reality.

Space Available

It's that time of year again . The snowbirds have flown and it's up to us to keep the vibe alive. We're looking for people who have something to say and music to share. There are scads of opportunities for people to step in while the regulars are on sabbatical. There are seasonal openings on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays with occasional openings throughout the broadcast schedule. With just a few training shifts, you could be the star of your very own radio show. All genres of music are welcome (have you heard the station lately?) and no experience is necessary (see above). While You're At It.... 

May we direct your attention to some of the stars who keep things going through the less glamorous times? Lots of folks would love to grab the mic during Carnival Week, but brave and dedicated are those who practice their craft this time of year. You may know Nancy and Melissa from their work as proprietors of the late great Muir Music. For the past couple of months, and for at least another month to come, you can hear them spread their special brand of joy in the 8 o'clock hour on Wednesday evenings. The Uke Diva will return from her flight of fancy at some point, but we're in very capable hands until that day comes.

Speaking of capable hands, we are truly and properly impressed with the polish and panache that Sean Gardner has brought to the studio from day one. He's already filled in for Mulligan Stew, Roots N Offshoots and the Blues Cruise in addition to keeping the home fires burning on the night before Christmas Eve. Look for more guest spots for Sean on the next couple of Tuesday afternoons.

Other notes from the broadcast calendar include Carol covering the blues show this Thursday morning, Big Band host Steve S. is covering the Sounds of America program on Thursday evening, and our favorite Cape teen DJ Sam covering this Saturday from 10a-12p.

Poetry For The People 

There's less than a week to go before the deadline for submission to the Joe Gouveia Outermost Poetry contest. There's real cash money available to the winners, who will be judged by Marge Piercy. Joe was the Poet Laureate of Cape Cod and the host of the Poets' Corner on our airwaves until his untimely death from cancer. Your modest $15 submission fee goes to support our work here at community radio. There will be a reading and celebration of the winners at Wellfleet Preservation Hall in the spring.
