The United Methodist Church of Evergreen
Pastor Russell Fletcher

Sunday, January 14, 2018
Services at 8:30 & 10:30 am
2nd Sunday after Epiphany

Russell's Ritings....

Dr. Pierce Harris was the long time preacher at FUMC, Atlanta, in the middle part of the last century.  Once he was to speak to about 400 inmates at a prison camp in north Georgia.  The service was outdoors and as Harris stood to speak he was surrounded by all of these men wearing their prison uniforms.

He was introduced by one of the convicts, who said: "Some years ago two boys lived in the same little Georgia town and attended the same school, played with the same bunch of fellows, and went to the same Sunday School.  One of them dropped out of Sunday School because he thought he had outgrown it, and that it was sissy stuff.  The other boy continued to attend because it really meant something to him and because God and Christ were important in his life.  The boy who dropped out and forgot about God is the one who is making the introduction today.  The other boy is the famous preacher who is now going to speak to you."

We all have the opportunity to choose the way we shall go in life.  We can follow those things we learn in Sunday School and worship or we can follow the tempting path of the world.  It is our choice to trust God or turn against Him.

I hope to see you Sunday.  Between the services we will enjoy a wonderful pancake breakfast offered periodically by our membership team so persons from our two services can get to know each other.  Adult Ed also begins the winter/spring series this Sunday.  If you are attending Adult Ed note we will be serving beginning at 9:15, so come by and pick up your pancakes on the way to the library.  In Adult Ed Dr. Lorna Idol will present the first of two programs on THE TEN LAWS OF EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION.  The sermon Sunday will be "Sleeping in Church" (I Samuel 3: 1 - 10).  I hope to see ALL of you here!

Russell

ADULT EDUCATION

Sunday, January 14, 2018 - 9:30-10:20 am
THE TEN LAWS OF HUMAN COMMUNICATION
Facilitator:  Dr. Lorna Idol
When changes in society threaten to isolate us and rob us of the time we need for maintaining and nurturing our relationships, the big challenge is to become more effective communicators. In Hugh Mackay's book,  Why Don't People Listen? , this Australian communications expert shows us a simple yet revolutionary way to improve the quality of our relationships-at home, at church, at work, in social settings-through a more disciplined and sensitive approach to communication. Lorna will share Mackay's ten most basic "laws" of human communication coupled with lively and listening discussion.

Sunday, January 21, 2018 -  9:30-10:20 am
EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Facilitator:  Dr. Lorna Idol
We will learn or review how to communicate clearly and effectively. In our personal, professional and church relationships, effective communication is the key to learning from others and to being heard in respectful, caring and Christian ways. We will learn and practice using active on-going listening and responding skills to facilitate effective communication (e.g., acknowledging, paraphrasing, reflecting, clarifying, elaborating and summarizing). We will be utilizing adult education materials from one of Lorna's published professional development programs:  Collaboration in the Schools:  Communicating, Interacting and Problem Solving.

Sunday, January 28 and February 4, 11 & 18 - 9:30-10:20 am
AN INTRODUCTION TO THE WORK OF  CHURCH AND SOCIETY
Facilitators:  Church and Society Team
Church and Society committees across our United Methodist Church work in areas of important social concern both within the U.S. and around the world. During the fall of 2017, the Inclusiveness Task Force reformed as the Church and Society Team. Guided by our mission of "living our lives and serving Christ in the contemporary world through faith, action and justice," we strive to live out our faith in our everyday lives. We welcome all who are interested to join this team and to learn more about the work of Church and Society during this four-week series. Each week we will explore two of the six focus areas on which Church and Society concentrates and examine the Biblical foundations of these focus areas.
