A Message From Michelle

The human spirit...it's alive and well each and every day; all we need to do is to look within.  In thinking of the message for this month, I was immediately drawn to the events that have unfolded before us during the past few weeks.  We are vividly reminded that a power far beyond the reach of our community, our government, or our armies can leave a path of destruction impossible to control.  We watched and waited knowing that Harvey was destined to strike the coast of Texas and watched as it unfolded.  Only days later, we waited as Irma bore down on beautiful islands; flattening them in her path and anxiously watched as millions fled the entire state of Florida to escape what could not be stopped.  But that human spirit remains strong!!

We've also watched people who are devastated and have lost everything swear to rebuild.  We've witnessed first responders once more heading into that danger, not fleeing from it.  We've opened our hearts and our wallets to assist in those efforts.

We celebrated that human spirit and our first responders on September 8 th with our 10 th Annual Hometown Heroes event.  Each year we invite our area police, fire and ambulance departments to a luncheon at Pickering Manor that honors their service to us and our community.  It's an opportunity to thank them and to also allow them to know our building outside an emergency response.  It has been purposely planned around the date of September 11 th because once more, we can never forget the lives lost on that fateful day and the strength of each community in this nation to join together to make all of us a little stronger.

And so, I chose this quote from Vince Lombardi (because after all, it IS football season!) to remind all of us the importance of finding that place deep within each one of us that surfaces during those "darkest of moments" and to exercise that muscle called "the human spirit"!
