Hazel McCallion
Ms Hazel McCallion (Former Mayor of Mississauga, Canada)

Ms Hazel McCallion is perhaps most well-known to Canadians for her role as Mayor of Mississauga - a position which she held for 36 years and 12 consecutive terms, from 1978 to 2014.

After retiring from politics at the age of 93, Ms McCallion joined Revera as Chief Elder Officer, to  provide advice and counsel to the Revera leadership team in support of fulfilling the company's vision to celebrate the ageless spirit of people.

In 2016, the province of Ontario formally declared February 14 - Ms McCallion's birthday - as Hazel McCallion Day, in recognition of her years of dedication and public service.

Dr Debra Whitman
Dr Debra Whitman (AARP)

Dr Debra Whitman is chief public policy officer for AARP - an American non-profit social organization that boasts a membership of over 37 million people 50 years of age and older.

In her role at AARP, Dr Whitman is responsible for policy development, as well as advancing the interests of older people through global thought leadership.

With a master's and doctorate degree in economics from Syracuse University,  Dr Whitman is recognized  as an authority on population aging, and has dedicated her career to addressing problems effecting the economic and health security of older people.

Dr Whitman will be speaking on a plenary panel, and the IFA is pleased to welcome her valued insights to the Conference.

AUSTRALIA: Integrating Age Friendly and Dementia Friendly - The Western Australian Approach to Age Friendly Communities

Session Excerpt:
Western Australia has had an established approach to the World Health Organisation's Age Friendly Communities for the past ten years that saw the State recognised as an Affiliate Member for the Global Network Age Friendly Communities in June 2017. 
 
Ms Young will share details of how integration between dementia friendly and age friendly communities has occurred within the local government (municipality) context.  The presentation will include practical examples relating to the City of Melville's approach of partnerships with Alzheimer's Western Australia and other community groups that clearly demonstrate dementia friendly practice within the broader context of age friendly communities. 
 
A focus will be on the inclusion of dementia friendly principles for age friendly businesses.  The presentation will also showcase the use of short film to promote people living well with dementia in an age friendly community.

INTERNATIONAL: Capturing the Longevity Dividend in an Aging World - Perspectives from Four Countries

Session Excerpt: 
Longer lives offer many benefits for our communities and individuals. We have the opportunity to unleash experience and energy through proven programs that help older adults identify goals, find opportunities, and connect with learning, work and social impact opportunities. 

Around the world, a growing number of programs recognize the value of engaging older adults in their communities, and the healthy aging benefits for those engaged individuals.

Ms Werley with co-presenters will share insights and program details from three organizations - Encore.org, Nesta, and Seoul 50 Plus Foundation - that are investing to realize the longevity dividend.

INTERNATIONAL: Aging Rural Communities - Policies, Practices, and Discourses 

Session  Excerpt:
Understanding the ways in which people grow older in rural areas - including access to health services and the influence of primarily volunteer-based age-friendly initiatives - contributes to an understanding of aging in rural populations; such as how people and communities may adapt to the challenges presented by aging rural populations. 

This symposium will provide a comprehensive overview of the policies, practices, and discourses surrounding rural aging, including rural age-friendly programming. This session will be of interest to those working in rural aging, including researchers, policy makers, and community members.
