This program is sponsored by the Town of Hillsborough, the City of Burlingame, and the Burlingame and Hillsborough Neighborhood Networks. City of Millbrae CERT Highlights
Marge Colapietro, Millbrae LEND-CERT Public Information Officer

"Greetings Millbrae CERT, LEND, MARC and SVIP Team Members.  Thank you for all of the help, time and support that you have given to our Millbrae CERT Programs.  Without you we would not be able to offer the "Award Winning" CERT Programs to our Community.  On behalf of all of our Team Leaders we extend our good wishes to you and to your families for a Happy New Year 2018. We look forward to another year of dedication to the betterment of our community through on-going education, volunteer leadership and growth of certified residents/businesses throughout Millbrae."
We begin 2018 by expressing our sincere gratitude to all of our Central County Firefighters who were called to join the fire strike teams in northern and southern California.  Fortunately, they all returned home -- worn and safe.  We also acknowledge the CCFD Firefighters who remained here with the sole responsibility to ensure the safety of all of us living and working within CCFD.  We pay special thanks to the families of all in CCFD for the many sacrifices they made during the horrific fires.

"San Mateo County Public Safety Communications (PSC) is dedicated to providing excellent Police, Fire and Medical emergency dispatch and communications services.  PSC touches thousands of lives daily.  PSC strive to be responsive by making each encounter a positive experience and treat every individual with empathy, respect and professionalism.  PSC is dedicated to life safety, partnerships, customer service and prides ourselves on excellence through teamwork."

The State of California provides translations services that are easily accessed once you dial 9-1-1.  When it is determined that a non-English speaker is on the line and the local 9-1-1 center does not have a bilingual dispatcher on-duty, the call is transferred to the translation service.  Please let family members, neighbors, friends who have English as a second language know about the 9-1-1 translation services.  When they call 9-1-1 the first thing they need to do is tell the dispatcher their preferred language and continue to follow directions.

We are quite aware of the devastation and loss of life in our Golden State of California.  "Living with Fire in San Mateo County - A guide for homeowners" provides specific information about protecting lives and property:  The Three R's of Defensible Space - Removal, Reduction, and Replacement. 1) REMOVE all dead and dry vegetation, 2) Break-up continuous vegetation, 3) REDUCE height of vegetation in 30-foot zone, 4) REMOVE ladder fuels such as low tree limbs 6 to 8 feet off the ground, 5) Create a 30-foot wide "lean, clean and green" area and 70-foot wide area with REDUCED fuel and 6) Maintain vegetation within the defensible space.

Prepare Your Car for Winter--Build an Emergency Car Kit:  1) Check or have a mechanic check items, such as:  antifreeze levels, battery and ignition system, brakes, exhaust system, fuel and air filters, heater and defroster, lights and flashing hazard lights, oil, thermostat, windshield wiper equipment, washer fluid level and winter tires.  If you plan to travel add the following to the emergency kit in your vehicle:  shovel, ice scraper, snow brush, boots, mittens, warm clothes, blankets, tow chain or rope, road sale and sand, tire chains or snow tires.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day will be celebrated on Monday - January 15th.   I came upon an excerpt in a speech that Dr. King gave that seems appropriate to share as we CERT, LEND, MARC and SVIP volunteers begin our new year of team service to our community:

"If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk;
if you can't walk then crawl; but whatever you do
you have to keep moving forward."  - Martin Luther King Jr.

SAVE THE DATE: SILVER DRAGON EXERCISE TO BE REPLACED
Captain Patrick Halleran sent the following email to our Program Coordinator - Dino DeRanieri:

On December 26, 2017 during the Emergency Managers Association Meeting there was a presentation by Dr. Shruti Dhapodkar MD, Health Emergency Preparedness Program Manager for the SMC Health Dept. (as she put it - she's the "new Carl Hess").  Shruti announced that in 2018 there will be a different CERT exercise instead of Silver Dragon.

The exercise does not have a name yet, but will focus on Light Search and Rescue and Triage. The exercise itself is scheduled for THURSDAY, APRIL 26, 2018.  We will be notified as more information becomes available.

    IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

Millbrae Man of the Year 2017: Dino DeRanieri
A very special evening for a very special person occurred on Friday, October 20th when 177 attendees gathered at Green Hills Country Club to honor the 45th Millbrae Man and Woman of the Year and a first-time Student of the Year.  What is quite meaningful to us is that 52 of the 177 were members of our Emergency Preparedness Programs including LEND, CERT, MARC and SVIP - so we thank you for your support of our Program Coordinator Dino DeRanieri.  Additionally, Dino's family and friends also came to share the wonderful evening.  The collective applause and standing ovations for Dino were thunderous as they should be.  It was so sweet when his six grandchildren heard that their grandpa was going to be on YouTube and on Millbrae Television - to them he is their hero and greatest star!

Something that Dino cherishes is that San Mateo County Sheriff Carlos Bolanos, Central County Fire Chief John Kammeyer, Millbrae Police Bureau Chief Roger Copeland and Millbrae Emergency Services Coordinator Bill Reilly - all leaders of our Emergency Preparedness Programs were present.

Dino concluded by thanking everyone who contributed to make this honor and the evening very special for him and for his family.

Hot off the Press: "STAYING SAFE IN MILLBRAE - a Home Protection Guide"
There is a new booklet, "STAYING SAFE IN MILLBRAE - a Home Protection Guide" that is a collaboration among Central County Fire Department, Millbrae Public Works Department and Millbrae Police Bureau/ San Mateo County Sheriff's Office.

We will be distributing copies during the January CERT training classes, skills day and at additional times during the year.  This is an extreme "must have" for all.   Copies of the booklet are available at Millbrae Fire Stations 35 and 37, Millbrae Police Bureau and at Millbrae Public Works counter at City Hall.
