Happy New Year!
Island Creek Express - January 2018
No-Water / Extreme Cold / Frozen Pipes Notice

Fairfax Water Authority is experiencing an extremely high number of "I have no-water” calls from residents due to the extremely cold temperatures which is causing their water meters to freeze. Fairfax Water asks that "if you have already contacted Fairfax Water for a technician visit, please be patient – we will get to you as soon as possible. We kindly ask that only customers who have not contacted us previously with an issue to please email watermainbreak@fairfaxwater.org or call 703-698-5800. Thank you and we gr eatly appreciate this patience!"
From the Board

Welcome 2018! The board is looking forward to completing several initiatives begun last year that will better our community. These initiatives include continuing to add more residents to our email address lists, creating a new social event policy which will allow residents to determine future events and an updated landscape and tree care process.

I want to thank everyone who volunteered their time for community events in 2017 and I hope that spirit continues in 2018! Community events can't be held without our wonderful volunteers, so please email communitymanager@islandcreek.org if you can volunteer any amount of time.

We are committed to making improvements in our communication with you this year and we welcome your input by emailing communitymanager@islandcreek.org. You are always welcome at our monthly board meetings which are held on the 3rd Wednesday of each month, 7 pm, at the Clubhouse.

Thank you very much for a great 2017 and we look forward to working with you in 2018. This community is great because of YOU!

Christmas Around the Creek

We want to thank all those who "decked the halls" for the holiday season. This is the second year that we are recognizing those who have gone above and beyond without going “Griswold” by placing a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place sign in the front yard of our winners. Congratulations winners!

Fall Leaf Collection a Success
Despite some delays caused by the weather, leaf collection was a success.
Trash Collection Service During Winter Months

Will there be trash pickup? To find the answer, go to www.americandisposal.com and look for the red alert bar in the upper left corner to see if service will be affected by inclement weather.

If suspension occurs, services will resume on the next regularly scheduled collection day. If you have already put out your garbage or recyclables, please return them to your garage or backyard and do not leave them on the sidewalk in front of your house.
Snow Removal Service Info

Plowing begins when 2” or more inches of snow accumulates. The first sweep through the community by the plow is to clear an access path for emergency vehicles and cars. After this, the plows go back through the community and clear the balance of the street. Check the Island Creek website for updates at  www.islandcreek.org and email concerns with your address to communitymanager@islandcreek.org or call (703) 339-6789.  Best to send an email with your address because it can be forwarded quickly to the plow supervisor.

VDOT, not Island Creek, plows Morning View Lane, Thomas Grant Drive (townhome side) & John Thomas Drive (townhome side). Report hazards or concerns to VDOT by calling 800-367-7623 or go to VDOTplows.org to see the status of plowing.

Other Tips:

  • Remember to clear the sidewalk in front of your property, the Association does not do this.
  • When clearing your sidewalk or parking space, be sure to deposit the snow in your front yard or island and not in an empty parking space or the street.
  • Shovel out mailbox area if needed to enable mail delivery.
  • Clear snow from fire hydrants & storm drains.
  • Watch out for children playing in snow and drive SLOWLY.

Pet Safety during the Winter Months
Dave Rusch – Area Manager, HLS

Prolonged exposure to ice melting agents can irritate your pets paws, so remember to brush their paws off and use a warm wet towel to clean paws when returning from a walk. It is best to do this as soon as you return so your pet doesn’t start licking them, which could possibly irritate their mouth with the same irritant that's on their paws.

A couple of great tips to keep your pet safe during these winter months recommended by The Humane Society of America and the ASPCA are to:

  • Take shorter, but more frequent walks with your pet for exercise and allowing them to do their business.
  • Wrap your pet; use functional sweaters or jackets on your pet. They are easy to put on and take off, and keep your pet warm.
  • Massage petroleum jelly or similar paw protectants into the paw pads prior to going outside.
  • Feed your pet a bit more in the winter since they burn extra energy, in order to keep their body temperatures up.
  • Make sure they have a warm place to sleep and rest.
