When We Dare to See the World
|
In their book, Coming Back to Life, Joanna Macy and Molly Young Brown explore some of the reasons why so many of us hold back from succumbing to the pain we feel for this troubled planet we live with. Some of those reasons we freely acknowledge. Others are so deeply etched into our psyches we barely recognize them. They include (and are not limited to):
- fear of pain
- fear of causing pain to others
- fear of appearing morbid
- fear of being unpatriotic
- fear of appearing weak
- fear of powerlessness
- being too busy
Radical Joy for Hard Times is all about finding and making beauty for wounded places. Yet before we can find and make beauty for these places, we must open up to the grief we feel about what is happening to them. That is the beginning of everything.
As we enter the time of what Macy calls
The Great Turning
, the global shift from an industrialized to a life-sustaining society, the most fundamental personal change we can make "is the act of courage and love we make when we dare to see our world as it is."
