Rector's Ramblings

We're not so sure about anything anymore.  Our trust issues extend into every area I can name. I realized one more this past week while watching the Georgia-Alabama game and listening to some of the commentary afterwards. For example, it was clear that the officials missed some important things that led to some un-assessed penalties on Alabama. I don't think any of them were intentional, mind you, but they were important in the outcome of the game. Was it the false start by an Alabama player that led to the movement of a GA player, the player the official saw on third down? Or was it the missed facemask call that would have resulted in a large penalty and could have boosted the drive to a touchdown? We will never know, and Georgia also has to own its own mistakes and miscues, all of which would also have changed the outcome of the game.

One radio commentator pointed out that our technology around sports like football has made it more difficult to get excited about the game. Catches, touchdowns, out-of-bounds are all subject to replay from almost every angle. Officials make mistakes, but their rulings were part of the trust in the way the game worked. This season the NFL has taken heat for its new definition of a catch, and the realization that catches that looked good weren't, and vice versa.  I'm not saying instant replay is all bad; it helps teams as much as it hurts them. But, it all adds up to a greater distrust of the authority on the field - the experts in the room - and it strips away some of the magic of a moment. Commentators are measured in their calls, knowing that a challenge is likely.

Worship

Epiphany, John the Baptist and Jesus

By John La Boone
"There came a man who was sent from God. His name was John."
- John 1:6

It is the Season of Epiphany at last - hallelujah! I love Epiphany. It is my favorite liturgical season by far. I find meaning in all of the seasons in our liturgical calendar but I enjoy Epiphany more than all the others put together. That's largely a personality thing. I'm just very much at home with having a full season of study, exploration, reflection and quiet contemplation. Traditionally, the church celebrates the Feast of Epiphany to commemorate Jesus being baptized by John the Baptist, and we see that event as the beginning of Jesus' public ministry. It is a time of wonder and of searching for the light of new understanding.

X Church
X Church resumes tonight, January 10th, at 6:30 pm, in historic Christ Church. This is a  time of contemplation and quiet introspection, that is enhanced by candlelight, incense, beautiful music. All are welcome to this intimate weekly Holy Eucharist service which is designed to be an island of calm in the middle of a busy week.

Revival at Honey CreekRevival
On Saturday, January 20, 2018, the Diocese of Georgia will offer a revival based on Fearless Faith and Boundless Love. Join us for a day of renewal and to celebrate the life and legacy of a Saint in Georgia, Deaconess Anna Alexander. The revival worship will use the propers for Deaconess Anna Alexander of Georgia (1865-1947) and displays, handouts, and a video will tell the story of this saint of Georgia.

The day begins with a service at Good Shepherd, Pennick where Deaconess Anna Alexander served. At 1:00 pm, parishioners from all over the diocese of Georgia will gather under a large tent on the grounds of Honey Creek Retreat Center to hear the Most Rev. Michael Curry, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, as he shares his message of love and renewal. Please save January 20th, as it will be a day to celebrate our faith together and to share it with others. For more information and to register online, click here

Because parking at Honey Creek is very limited, we have arranged for two buses to drive round trip from Christ Church to Honey Creek on the day of the revival. The buses leave Christ Church at 10:00 am and depart Honeycreek at 3:00 pm. The cost per person is $28. You may pay for a bus seat by check made out to Christ Church, Frederica. Write "Bus" in the memo line. Mail checks to the church office or put them in the offering plate.

Youth at the Revival!
The Youth weekend structured around the Revival: Fearless Faith, Boundless Love is still open for additional registrants. This event, which is intended for youth in Grades 6-12, will begin on Friday, January 19, and conclude on Sunday, January 21. Friday night includes time with the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, the Most Rev. Michael Curry, while Saturday includes participation in the Saturday Eucharist at Good Shepherd, Pennick and participation in and support of the Revival at Honey Creek on Saturday afternoon!

However, there are additional spots available, so go ahead and sign up, and invite a friend! You do not have to be an Episcopalian to participate in the weekend or the Revival on Saturday.
