|

Now, when the sun shines and a gentle breeze blows, get out and see what birds you can find. Even in the biggest city there are birds to discover. And if you can get out into rural or wild landscapes, watch and listen. If you can't pick out a tiny body among the branches and leaves, their birdsong can thrill you.

The 435 plates in this volume were originally published by Audubon, in London, during the years 1827-1838. A superb set of the original "Elephant Folio" plates - a set believed to be the finest in uncut state in America - has, through the courtesy of the owner, been followed in the making of the current reproductions.
The bird names accompanying the present reproductions are those adopted in the Check-List of the American Ornithologists' Union. Further information about the original plates is to be found in the Transcript of Legends on the Original Plates in the back of the present volume.

This book follows him on birdwatching expeditions in various locales, including a chapter entitled Trailing America's Rarest Bird (the ivory-billed woodpecker).

Application for membership in the Tulsa Audubon Society also inserted at the back of the book. Rare and precious find.

Jules Michelet (21 August 1798 - 9 February 1874) was a French historian. He was born in Paris to a family with Huguenot traditions.
Hector Giacomelli, born in Paris on April 1, 1822 and died in Menton on December 1, 1904. He was a watercolorist, french engraver and illustrator, best known for his paintings of birds. He studied with Gustave Dore, worked on newspapers such as The World Illustrated, The Store Picturesque, and Illustration, and illustrated works by authors such as Jules Michelet and Alfred de Musset.

Book is full of clippings and newspaper articles, and there is even a small page called "Audubon Daily Field Card of Birds Occurring in the Central United States (from the Mississippi River through the Great Plains to the Rocky Mountains)" tucked in at page 13 along with a list of the Audubon Bird Leaflets available for ten cents in the mid 1950s.
Five pages of color photos from another publication inserted at page 110. Well used. Wear to cover at hinges. Spine is separated at title page, but not completely loose. Previous owner's name inside front and back of book.

The Birds' Christmas Carol is a novel by Kate Douglas Wiggin printed privately in 1886 and published in 1888 with illustrations by Katharine R. Wireman.
Wiggin published the book to help fund the Silver Street Free Kindergarten, which she founded in 1878. In 1917, the story was adapted as the silent movie "A Bit o' Heaven" starring Mary Louise as Carol, Donald Watson and Ella Gilbert as Mr. and Mrs. Bird and Mary Talbot as Mrs. Ruggles. A catalogue for the Simplex Manufacturing Co., based in Quincy, IL. 24 pages of description of the Simplex Hatcher and Brooder, including patents, product details, construction, heating, ventilation, egg trays, pricing, etc.
Half of the entire booklet is dedicated to testimonials about the product. One amusing one comes from C. A. Fowler of N. Guildofrd, Conn. who writes, "I set 144 eggs under twelve hens and put 140 eggs in the Simplex Hatcher at the same time, and the machine beat the hens. I don't have to sit up nights with it."
