May 2017
Monthly Update: May is Sleep Better Month!

Did you know that May is both Sleep Better Month and Foster Care Awareness Month? Through our partnerships with Arizona Friends of Foster Children Foundation and Tumbleweed, Furnishing Dignity is putting together an event to remember! We will celebrate with a party at Peter Piper Pizza (thank you Amanda Ingle!), showcasing a very gracious donation from Tuft & Needle of 24 mattresses that will go to foster youth as they age out of the foster care system without the resources necessary to furnish their new "homes" with essential household items. The Arizona Coyotes, a new Furnishing Dignity partner, will donate the funds to purchase all of the linens for the beds. Thank you Coyotes! Stay tuned for more exciting things to come, as we help foster youth become successful adults and productive community members.

We are very excited to announce that as of April 30, 2017, Furnishing Dignity has provided essential home furnishings to 164 individuals this year. This is very significant growth because for all of 2016 Furnishing Dignity served 285 individuals. We are looking forward to a stellar year, assisting more individuals and families than ever before in their quest for self-sufficiency and empowerment. Kudos to our volunteers and Board of Directors for making this happen!

We would like to thank the Arizona Diamondbacks for donating 200 tickets to their games so that our partners and volunteers could enjoy an amazing day at the ball field. Everyone had so much fun and the D'Backs are rockin' this season!

AZ Gives Day final numbers! We are very humbled and honored for all the donations on Arizona Gives Day. Furnishing Dignity received $14,052, which is an increase of nearly 150% compared to last year. These funds will help purchase beds for youth aging out of foster care, and individuals and families transitioning from homelessness to a place of their own. Our gratitude goes out to all who made this day a huge success for Furnishing Dignity. Thank you!

Do you have college kids home for the summer or high school kids who need something to do? Do you hear them saying "I am bored!"? Call us to volunteer or visit our website for a list of volunteer opportunities.

There are a lot of things we need help with: organizing and putting away donations, packing small household items in boxes for delivery, loading items for delivery, and helping move items into homes for our recipients. We start earlier in the day in the summer, so please consider volunteering at least one day for 3-4 hours. Thank you!

Furnishing Dignity would like to thank Gina Anderson from Carrington Real Estate Services for the use of her truck. When we have smaller moves we are able to use her truck instead of using valuable dollars to rent a larger moving van. We are so thankful for amazing community members like Gina who help us meet our mission of helping individuals and families dwell in dignity by providing furnishings and other essential household items to transform a house into a home.
Marketing/PR help is needed! Is this you? As Furnishing Dignity grows, we find that our administrative needs are different and varied. We are looking for a volunteer or potential Board Member who has professional skill sets in the Marketing and Public Relations field. If this is something you love to do and are looking for a place to donate your time and talent, please contact Erin Cornelius, our Executive Director, at [email protected] or call 480-340-3417. Help us secure more donations, spread the word and create awareness for Furnishing Dignity, and help make connections in the world of media.

Kudos to Hands On Greater Phoenix and Dollar Days for helping us move furnishings into the home of a single mom and two tweener sons! Without their help, the move would have taken 3-4 hours instead of the hour that it actually took to complete the project. Furnishing Dignity is so grateful for all of the community support and volunteer efforts to help us pack household items and move furniture for people who are in desperate need of home furnishings. This family is now sleeping on beds instead of the floor and can have family dinners together at their "new" dining room table because of volunteers and community donations. Please see our list of needs below, so we can help more families.

Needs List: We are hoping you can donate "gently used" or new bunk beds, microwaves, baking dishes, cookie sheets, towels, bath mats, twin size kids pattern sheets, silverware and pots & pans.

Enjoy your summer!
