EQUIPMENT SPOTLIGHT : THE WATERROWER AND BENEFITS OF ROWING

The WaterRower is a key piece of equipment at Rival, great for improving cardiovascular performance, promoting weight loss, and building total body strength. Rowing offers four main benefits:
  • Low impact - Rowing allows for a cardio and muscular endurance workout without adding extra weight to your joints and bones, which are free from the stress and impact common in running and stepping.
  • All ages and fitness levels - The WaterRower is easy to learn and is equally great for beginners, experienced athletes, and maturing adults given its low-impact nature. The repetition of the movement allows for plenty of practice to master the technique.
  • Weight loss - Because rowing uses all the major muscles in the legs, core, chest, and back in tandem with a strong cardio workout, it results in higher caloric and fat burn.
  • Flexibility and endurance - Rowing involves a full range of motion, flexion and extension, which increases and maintains mobility in the joints.

Whether you take a class (Rowing, Rival Row) or opt to use one as part of your own workout routine, we have 14 WaterRowers available for your workout.

If you have any questions about how to use the WaterRower or other equipment, please stop by the front desk or ask any of the Rival trainers or instructors. We're here to help!

FIT TIP: FOAM ROLLING AND SELF MYOFASCIAL (SMR) RELEASE

Most everyone has used a foam roller at some point, or at least seen them around Rival or out and about while shopping. But what are those tube-like, often bumpy pieces of hard foam actually for? Here are the main benefits:
  • Increased range of motion
  • Increased blood flow
  • Decreased recovery time
  • Reduced likelihood of injury

Each and every muscle in the body is surrounded by fibrous tissues called fascia. Without proper stretching and care, the fibers can become crossed and attach themselves to nerves and muscles, which ultimately results in pain and inhibited motion. Regardless of whether you're a runner, cyclist, power lifter, swimmer, rower, or an active person of any kind, foam rolling is a SMR technique that aids in the recovery of muscles prone to overuse.
