Well, not really! Whereas it looks like a floating pen, it is actually just my trusty 4-color pen atop two nail heads protruding from a sheet of plywood shear panel. As was mentioned a few weeks back in a recent article, it is imperative that these nails be driven fully into the plywood, while yet not rupturing the skin of the ply itself; in other words, there is a fine balance to how to install nails such that maximal seismic readiness is steadily in place.
Boring details...? Maybe so, but there are exact specs on how and why certain things are done during a seismic retrofit, many points of judgment and exact logics that need to be adhered to for maximum benefit.
Not too dissimilar to a car having its various engine components tuned for maximum performance, there are many aspects to a seismic retrofit that if done correctly, will allow it to perform at its best should the need ever arise.
