First Thursday Coffee
with Head of School,
Michael Zimmerman

Thursday, January 11, 2018 | 8:00 am
Schoolhouse Community Room

Dear Parents,

PLEASE NOTE:  THIS IS NOT THE FIRST THURSDAY OF JANUARY

At Friends School Haverford growing up and interacting with people who are different than you is a benefit that enriches every student's daily experience and serves her or him well as preparation for life and living.

A group of FSH parents have been meeting regularly for two years to talk about the value derived from our school's diversity and how to celebrate this aspect of our program with such events as last year's panel discussion.

At the January 11 Thursday Coffee I hope you will join representatives of our parent diversity group, several middle school students, learning specialist Amy McCann, and me for a book group style discussion of diversity.

Among other things, conversation will focus on the book,  Brown Girl Dreaming  by Jacqueline Woodson. You need not have read the book to attend the coffee.

If you have questions about our Carousel Connections friends or our partnership with Brandywine Senior Living facility; if you wonder about how best to talk with children of various ages about diversity; if you have questions of your own; if you have experiences pertaining to diversity that you would like to share-please join us for this Thursday Coffee!

We will gather at 8:00 am to enjoy refreshments and each other's company. We will begin the meeting at 8:15 am.

If the topic of this month's coffee is of interest to you but you are unable to attend the meeting, please feel free to contact Nancy Hurley in the office to schedule an appointment to meet with me at a time that is convenient for you.

Regular and forthright discussion, open lines of communication, and the exchange of ideas improve our community. I am grateful for your support. I am always happy to hear from you.  Please feel free to come to First Thursday coffees with topics of your own to propose for discussion.

I hope to see you there,
Michael

Holiday Meeting for Worship

FSH was abuzz with activity on our last day of school before winter break. In Heritage House, Forest's Edge and preschool watched the movie "Spot's Magical Christmas," a class tradition, while Pre-kindergarten cozied up in their pajamas and enjoyed the movie "The Polar Express." Kindergarten wrote a thank you letter to Doug Keith for his reading of "The Night Before Christmas" and made hot chocolate. Grades 1/2 shared their writing celebration stories with their parents. Grades 3/4 had a delicious breakfast party and middle school enjoyed a special holiday breakfast, games and crafts with each other. Our entire community was invited to breakfast before heading over to the Meetinghouse for our special Holiday Meeting For Worship and Singing. Click here for photos.
Holiday Fireside Reading

School committee member Doug Keith treated our Heritage House students to an annual fireside reading of "The Night Before Christmas" in the Meetinghouse. The children gathered around as Doug lit a cozy fire and listened to him read the wonderful traditional holiday story. Afterwards, the students presented Doug with a gift and then everyone enjoyed some cider and snacks.  Click here for photos.
Simple Machines

Grades 5/6 are learning about simple machines in science. A simple machine is a mechanical device that changes the direction or magnitude of a force and makes work easier. To test this, students took turns sitting on a swing while the rest of the class pulled them up and down with a pulley system consisting of two pulleys and four ropes. They confirmed that the work was four times easier Click here   for photos.

Parent Survey

From time to time it is our custom to solicit feedback about our school. You may be aware of conversations of this nature at  Parent Coffees or PTO meetings. We have a  three question survey we ask that you participate in. If you already responded to the survey - THANK YOU!  Such feedback helps us to work together to improve our program as a united community.
Pretzel Fridays

This pretzel initiative is an opportunity to fundraise for middle school trips, build community, and engage with math skills in meaningful ways. The Carousel Connections crew and middle school math students will sell pretzels during the class snack times on Fridays. If you would like your child to receive a freshly baked pretzel, please send a $1 in with him/her. Please note that we will not have a pre-paid sale due to our focus on the math and money exchange. Thank you for supporting our pretzel sale!
