Dear Friends of Safe Harbor Lab Rescue,
2018 will be the sixteenth year that Safe Harbor has been rescuing Labs!  It's amazing to think we have rescued about 3,400 Labs over those years. So many happy Labs were "home for the holidays" thanks to you!
Our heartfelt thanks to our generous donors on Colorado Gives Day and throughout the year who make our work possible. The lives of our rescued Labs will be so much better because of your kindness and generosity. These include over 60 senior Labs from 7 to 14 years old rescued in 2017 and many in need of significant medical care.
On to 2018! We know there will be challenges, but with the partnership of our wonderful volunteers, supporters and vets we are ready. Rescuing, caring for and finding a loving forever home for each Lab is our passion!
Best wishes to you and all your critters for a happy and healthy new year!

Miss Avery: Best Friend and Hero - By Bill Prescott
 Avery came into my life last February. I had recently lost my good friend, Dakota, a fourteen-and-a-half-year old Yellow Lab who was blind and diabetic. At two-and-a-half-years old, Avery was an immediate fit into my life. She enjoys playing fetch with the Chuckit ball, going to the lake and retrieving the bumper dummy, going hiking with me on the mountain trails and helping herself to food in the refrigerator - yes, she's a smart girl and knows how to open the fridge!!
I had noticed that Avery has a real gentle and sweet side to her. When I have taken Avery with me to Home Depot and Cabela's, she is always well behaved and good with people that she meets - sitting without command when strangers come up and pet her. This led me to believe that Avery would be a good Therapy Dog.
For the past four years I have been volunteering at Porter Adventist  Hospital in their Paws for a Cause Pet Therapy program with Dakota and a standard long-haired Dachshund named Bridgette. I had enrolled Avery in a Pet Therapy training program, and with help from Safe Harbor Lab Rescue providing additional dog obedience training sessions, Avery was ready.
Avery recently completed all the criteria at Porter Hospital and got her own Porter Hospital Volunteer photo ID badge. On Christmas Day, Avery, outfitted in her new Scottish Red collar, bow tie and leash, went down to Porter Hospital with me. We spent the next few hours visiting patients, family members and hospital staff. Avery was a big hit, bringing love and comfort to all whom she met. Avery and I will continue to go to Porter Hospital on a monthly basis.
P.S. I forgot to mention that Avery is also a Blood Donor Dog at Evergreen Animal Hospital in Evergreen, CO. She is truly a HERO!!!

Dear Labby-
Everyone in my family is talking about New Year's resolutions. Mostly it's just blah, blah, blah, but occasionally I hear words like "food" and "exercise", two of my faves. What's this all about?

Dear Barkley -
Every New Year's Day people nobly resolve to do things to make their life and that of others better in the coming year. But resolutions aren't just for people! Here are a couple you can go for . . .
1. Eat less, exercise more
We Labs tend to get pudgy and a little too comfortable on the couch in the winter. Be brave and ask your parents to measure your food. Then bring them your leash for a daily walk or their car keys for a trip to the dog park.
2. Beg less
Yes, you need to work on your dignity this year.
3. Steal less food
If you're a kitchen kleptomaniac, it's time to clean up your act.
4. Go back to school
No matter if you're 6 months or 16 years old, learning new things keeps you sharp and results in treats. It's a great way to spend time with our people and impress them with how smart we are.
5. Make a date with the vet
We play how we're feeling close to the paw sometimes so we don't worry our Peeps. It's important to get ourselves in for a checkup once a year to make sure all is well and stays well!
6. Update your ID
Does your ID tag have all your latest contact info? Is your current address and phone number on file with the microchip company? If you get lost, you can't get home without an ID! Who wants to end up in the Animal Control paddy wagon?
7. Do something new together!
Sit on the patio at Starbucks, scale a fourteener, become a therapy dog, sign up for agility or be a friend to a Safe Harbor

 Ten-year-old Coco is loved, pampered, and home for the holidays, as she snuggles up with her new mom, Meagan, and enjoys all of the sights and sounds of the season. Coco is looking forward to all the good times ahead and can't wait greet the brand new year with a wagging welcome from the warmth and comfort of her new forever and ever home.
Meagan tells us:
Coco is a sweet southern girl who found her forever home with our family in Boulder, Colorado. Coco arrived in poor health but has immensely improved over the last few months. Coco is nearly unrecognizable -- her coat is shiny and full, she is energized and full of life. This sweet southern belle spends her days with her furry friends Angel (another Safe Harbor Lab) and Teddy, her puppy friend. Coco is relaxing and feeling pampered -- receiving weekly baths, lots of walks, and yummy salmon oil with every dinner. She is a wonderful addition to the family and will receive a life full of love and kisses.

Volunteer Spotlight: Cathie O'Connor
As you can see from the photo, Cathie has a house full of labs! Cathie
 and her husband started their lab family shortly after they got married, and they currently have three wonderful labs - Rooney, Maddie, and Lily. Rooney, who was adopted from Safe Harbor, really got their imaginations going with some of his non-Lab tendencies to the point where the family checked his DNA to learn that he is Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, Greyhound, and Dachshund. That is quite the mix!
Cathie learned about Safe Harbor about seven years ago when she started the application process to adopt Rooney. Then
six years later, her children were grown and out of the house, and Cathie decided to see what kind of help Safe Harbor needed. Now, Cathie works on application checks and the transport team. Her favorite part of doing application checks is helping wonderful applicants find their new Lab best friend, and her favorite part of working on the transport team is, "interacting with all of those sweet, precious dogs that only want to be loved."
