The DC Collaborative 2017 Top Ten:
Thanks to you 2017 has been a significant 20th anniversary for the DC Arts and Humanities Education Collaborative.
Through our #CollaborativeEffect, we remained focussed on our mission to provide equitable access to the arts and humanities for DC public and public charter school students. Together, we proudly:
- Welcomed our newest institutional members including the National Museum of African American History and Culture, Solas Nua, Learning Life, Post Classical Ensemble, Washington Chorus, Only Make Believe, O Street Museum Foundation, National Children's Health System and Numbers Alive! as well as new practitioner members Lana Wong, Juanita White, Hannah Jacobsen Blumenfeld, Mahogany Bleu and Educate to Create! And, our staff grew when we officially welcomed Rebekka Nickman as our AHFES programs manager!
- Revitalized our Program Committee to include peer-led review of member field-trips, curriculum and professional development offerings. We transitioned our Members Committee to the Collective Impact Committee so that our collective impact work fully encompasses our entire membership and community of practice. In addition, the committee is creating new networks based on themes and topics of interest to our community.
- Listened and expanded our convenings to include topics that are important to members such as and expansion of our DCPS "Connecting to Curriculum Workshops" to include Arts, ELA and Social Studies teams; along with panels on "Early Childhood Learning and Family Engagement" and "What it Means to be a National Organization Serving Local Audience." We also held our first "Nonprofit Speed Dating" event to foster greater community collaboration!
- Expanded our StoryBank blogposts to better tell the story of the DC Collaborative. Members, educators and partners of the Collaborative are invited to share their story in arts and humanities education, to help us showcase the work we are collectively doing to positively impact DC public and public charter school students and their teachers.
- Launched a remarkable series of video stories about the DC Collaborative with the support of Stone Soup Films. Watch our stories here.
- Held engaging Membership Meetings at Dumbarton Oaks, Shakespeare Theatre Company and National Geographic Society with special guests including DC Councilmember David Grosso Chair of the Committee on Education; Jeff Poulin, Americans for the Arts; John-Paul C. Hayworth, DC State Board of Education; Mila Yochum, DC Office of Out of School Time Grants and Youth Outcomes, in addition to other member-led panel conversations with you!
- Coordinated field-trip opportunities for 34,700 DCPS and DCPCS students through our Arts and Humanities for Every Student (AHFES) legacy program along with co-producing community youth arts exhibitions at Pepco Gallery with the National Cherry Blossom Festival and Civili-Tea art contest, among others.
- Advocated for increased support for arts and humanities education with testimony to DCPS Chancellor Antwan Wilson and before DC City Council in support of the Commission on the Arts and Humanities. We testified before the Education Committee of City Council for increased support for arts and humanities education. We worked with ArtsAction DC to ensure arts and humanities education is part our community's advocacy focus and volunteer-facilitated community conversations with the DC Office of Planning and the Commission on the Arts and Humanities for the DC Cultural Plan.
- Reached new friends and supporters with fundraising events including the September 20th DC Whole Foods Markets 5% Shopping Day which raised a record $28,000!
- Proudly announced the designation of Any Given Child DC with The Kennedy Center. The DC Collaborative proudly serves as the lead backbone support organization to help improve the collective impact of our arts and humanities education community of practice.

Each year, at least 20,000-35,000 students from DC public schools attend at least 500 free performances at our nation's world-class cultural institutions. We look forward to another year of providing these valuable experiences to DC public and public charter school students and teachers.

Get Involved - Join our Committees!

The DC Collaborative's Programming Committee is open to members, partners and educators. The Committee will assist the DC Collaborative team in furthering their mission of equity and access to quality arts and humanities education for all students and teachers in the DC public education system (traditional and public charter). The Programming Committee will analyze and evaluate the quality of arts and humanities education experiences, develop opportunities for mentorship and program improvement and inform the Arts and Humanities for Every Student policies and procedures.
