Oysters in the Chesapeake Bay Professional Development for K-12 Teachers

The high school and elementary school registration is now closed. Please contact Bart Merrick (bart.merrick@noaa.gov) or Donna Stotts (donna.stotts@noaa.gov) if you wish to be placed on a waiting list.

This summer the NOAA Environmental Science Education Center and NOAA Ocean Service will host a professional development opportunity for K-12 teachers highlighting locally relevant, age-appropriate lessons that focus on the Eastern oyster in Chesapeake Bay. Oysters have long been a valuable resource, both historically and today. This workshop will provide hands-on interdisciplinary activities concerning oyster history, ecology, and restoration in Chesapeake Bay, and how human and earth systems interact.

Each activity identifies connections to Maryland Environmental Literacy Standards and the three dimensions of the Next Generation Science Standards. The lessons are largely indoor classroom activities that support outdoor environmental education activities and Meaningful Watershed Educational Experiences (MWEEs)

Eastern OysterElementary, Middle, and High School levels will each receive (1-2) days of training between July 19 and July 27.   The schedule is as follows:

If you click on the Grade Level above, you can see the activities list. On the Registration Page below you will be asked to identify which grade level training you wish to attend.

Stipends of $125/day are available with the expectation that, if appropriate for their students and curriculum, teachers will implement at least one lesson during the 2017-2018 school year. As such, NOAA staff will be in contact and will assist you as needed during the year. This expectation is to evaluate how NOAA resources are being used by teachers.
