Dear Reader

So we are now recording news clips for StMaartenNews.com. We used the opportunity Nomination Day offered us on Friday, January 5th, to record interviews with the various party leaders. We hope you find our short news clips newsworthy and informative.

According to Robbie Ferron, parties have no clear platform. We agree. Read his letter to the editor and see if you agree as well.

You can tell the snap elections in St. Maarten is drawing international attention when multi-millionaire and philanthropist, Jacob Gelt Dekker, takes Theo Heyliger to task in his most recent column entitled ' Independence' wherein he also issues a challenge to politicians on St. Maarten about how to obtain true independence. Click here to read his column.

Our own Hilbert Haar makes an analysis for StMaartenNews.com in his opinion piece ' A new political powerhouse' based on the news that 93 candidates have been presented for the February 26 elections. Matching the new official colour of the United Democrats party - black being the new red and green - Hilbert Haar is of the opinion that there are indeed a couple of dark horses in this election race that might stop the UD from obtaining an outright 8 seats majority. Click here to read his opinion piece, if you haven't already.

All this publisher can say is that all the parties have their work cut out for them. Because our snap poll on Saturday recorded a whopping 83% of the 18 respondents indicating that they will not be endorsing a party today. Hence our video support for the SMCP in their plea for people to come out today and endorse their party.

Any party for that matter, is our opinion because despite the fact that people have other issues and problems on their minds, our well-fought and hard-earned democratic right is still of the utmost importance in our society and it is our duty to the next generation to give a party or parties the mandate to do what is right for our island, else we will all be wearing facemasks, not just when we visit the SXM Airport like the visiting Dutch Chambers presidents, but on the whole island, especially when visiting the communities around the dump, as the Nature Foundation points out in their press release about the landfill.

We do not believe the voter sentiment is that low. So let's see what the actual turnout will be like today. StMaartenNews.com will be on hand to make video recordings of the occasion for our next edition.

The Publisher,
