Sharing Our Faith
THE FEAST OF THE EPIPHANY
The Feast of the Epiphany is celebrated on January 6. This feast commemorates the visit of the wise men to worship the baby Jesus. Tradition tells us that their names were Caspar, Melchior and Balthassar. The men were astrologers who were looking for the star that would lead them to the promised Messiah. This was prophesied in the Book of Micah. According to the Gospel narratives, the wise men brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh with them. These gifts were very meaningful. Gold was a precious and expensive gift, and showed how important Jesus was. Frankincense is a sweet perfume which was often burned in the temple to worship God. It was a sign that Jesus should be worshiped. Myrrh was used to keep things fresh, and it was used by the women to anoint Jesus’ body when he died. By bringing it as a gift to Jesus, the wise men foretold his suffering and death.
The wise men took a different road home after they encountered Jesus. They changed their plan and were changed by their meeting with Jesus. They needed to avoid King Herod, who wanted to kill the baby that was expected to be a king.
Like the wise men, let us seek Jesus, and when we encounter him, let us take a different way and be changed by our experience with Him.
Koins 4 Kids Drive
January is Koins 4 Kids Month! Each year, all of the MSJ Dominican schools in California participate in a month long fundraiser called Koins 4 Kids with Pia Penguin as the mascot. (Mother Pia was the sister who began the MSJ Domincian order and because they dress in black and white, we lovingly call them penguins.)This fundraiser was established by Vision of Hope (an organization that exists specifically to support the inner city MSJ Dominican schools) to encourage students to help other students The money raised goes to support the 8 inner city Vision of Hope schools, which includes St. Ignatius. We are so blessed to be a Dominican Affiliate School as well as a Vision of Hope School. We will be holding snack sales on Fridays for Koins 4 Kids. Thank you for your support!
Our 6th Grade brought in the most money for Koins 4 Kids last year and Pia Penguin has been with them all year long. In February, we will announce the new winners!
