Update on the Canadian Indigenous Chamber of Commerce (TCICC)

The board of ACC thought it was an appropriate time to update our membership on our initiative  towards becoming The Canadian Indigenous Chamber of Commerce(TCICC).

To this point we have completed the major groundwork necessary for TCICC. The board, after four drafts were produced, then approved the charter & bylaws for TCICC. These documents have incorporated all essential by-laws from ACC and added the necessary components reflecting the current business association environment, an organization that will be national scope and governance standards. The creation of this formal document was the starting point & we believe we captured not only strong governance but the spirit and culture that TCICC should encompass. The article in the Connections magazine "Going National" provides a good perspective of the benefits, goals & ambitions of TCICC.

In our charter we have incorporated Article 92 ( Business & Reconciliation) of the Truth & Reconciliation report in it's entirety. We think this is a good cornerstone component for TCICC and important touch point with Truth &  Reconciliation. All 94 articles of TRC were vetted for content and to ensure the TCICC charter was aligned in the overlap with commerce  & TRC.

On the regulatory side we applied and have gained title to the name "The Canadian Indigenous Chamber of Commerce." We also have filed our TCICC charter and by-laws under the not for profit act and have been approved to operate under the act. The major work left to be accomplished is the formal transition from ACC to TCICC, which we intend to accomplish through the summer. We will presenting a brief update and a transition plan at the AGM  on June 27th for membership approval.

One highlight to our work so far is that we have secured one major sponsor that has agreed to provide funds on a  an "as-needed-basis" to support and fund the transition process. The board is looking forward to discussing and presenting with the TCICC at our June 27th AGM.

The 21st Vision Quest Conference & Trade Show - Canada's longest running Aboriginal economic development conference - takes place May 16 to 18 in Winnipeg. Since 1997, more than 15,000 people have participated in Vision Quest, and experienced firsthand the value of attending a gathering like this.

"Vision Quest's goal is to educate, enlighten and entertain through a schedule packed with workshops and courses, inspiring speakers, an expansive trade show, cultural demonstrations, and entertainment," says Kim Bullard, Chair of Vision Quest Conferences Inc. "It's this winning formula that has granted Vision Quest a long and successful history."

There are many benefits for Vision Quest delegates, including exclusive opportunities for professional development. On Tuesday May 16, delegates can choose from participating in one of two pre-conference courses.

In the course called 'From Vision to Reality: How to Start a Successful Business', participants will discover how  to get businesses up and running, and learn about tools, resources and funding that may be available to help start businesses.

In 'Rise Above: Living A Life Teachings' participants will learn about cultural teachings from tipi to talking stick, and will be challenged to reflect on the sacred, identity, their own untapped potentials, and personal barriers.

On May 17 and 18, there are two full days of workshops covering topics like business administration, launching a business, money management, social enterprises and co-ops, careers in manufacturing, acting for film and television, Indigenous entrepreneurship, and more.

Vision Quest's Trade Show is the place to be for business networking, exploring partnerships, finding out about new opportunities, and purchasing one-of-a-kind creations.

More than 90 exhibitors will be on display, representing business suppliers, service providers, hospitality groups, career opportunities, economic organizations, educational institutions, information services, and a wide selection of artists and artisans. The Trade show is free for the public to attend on May 17 (8:30am to 4:30pm) and May 18 (8:30am to 2:30pm).

Vision Quest keynote presenters Adam Beach and Kyle Nobess will be available to meet-and-greet in the Trade Show after their keynotes. Come and meet Kyle on May 17 between 11:30am and 12:00pm, and Adam will be there on May 18 from 11:30am to 12:30pm.

Brand new to Vision Quest this year is a free public lecture. On Wednesday May 17, from 7-9pm, the public is invited to attend a presentation on a topic of great importance to northern communities. 'Ice Road and Cargo Airships: State of the Technology and Opportunities for the North' will explore the impact of climate change on northern ice roads, the life-lines to remote fly-in communities. Dr. Barry Prentice, a recognized expert in airship technology, will be at Vision Quest to present the results of 17 years of research in this field.

It's a Vision Quest tradition to wrap up with a Gala on Thursday evening. This year's banquet features a three-course dinner, presentation of awards, cultural and artistic demonstrations, and featured entertainment by renowned comedian Don Burnstick.

New Member Profile:  Native Canadian Chip Corporation

Based in Riverton, Native Canadian is the producer of  Tomahawk Chips.

The best welcome you can give our newest member is trying some of their great product. Tomahawk chips come in 4 flavours and are available at Giant Tiger and other local stores. Not that the four flavours  have been been exhaustively sampled but the Fire Chips come highly recommended.  An interesting fact from our new members website,  "Potato chips were invented by George Crum, a Native American chef at the Moon Lake Lodge in Saratoga Springs, New York in 1853."

How about that?
