Senior Spotlight : Autumn Giorgi
An Article by School Counselor Dianne McCarthy

When Autumn Giorgi walks into a room you know your day is going to get brighter.  Her infectious smile and warm personality can make anyone feel better about themselves.   If you ask anyone what they think of when they think of Autumn their response is going to include adjectives like friendly, kind, warmhearted, beautiful, and conscientious.
Teachers appreciate having Autumn in their classroom because she is the type of student who finds an appreciation in learning new things, and expanding her knowledge about things she already knows about.  One of her teachers, Ms. Petraitis, states " Autumn is one of the most inquisitive and curious students I've ever had. I love how she is always willing to ask questions when learning about issues in class. She is very humble and does not even fully acknowledge her greatest strengths. My favorite thing about Autumn is how she is such a genuine learner- never trying to make herself look a certain way in the classroom, but just having that natural presence."

In addition to her warm personality, anyone who knows Autumn also recognizes her passion for cosmetology.  Autumn has an amazing natural talent when it comes to cosmetics, and she is always perfectly made-up while still letting her natural beauty shine through.  Autumn has been teaching herself makeup applications for years and she has already created quite a name for herself in this area, helping others prepare for events ranging from parties to weddings, all with the goal to make the individual feel special and look amazing.

After Autumn graduates from SRHS this spring, she will continue her passion of making others feel and look beautiful by attending cosmetology school and getting her professional certifications. I cannot wait to see what the future holds for Autumn!

Senior Spotlight : Jason Iannitelli
An Article by English Teacher Nicole St. Jean

Jason Iannitelli is a graduating senior this year at Sanborn Regional High School.  He is a student of integrity and ambition.  He is an essential part of our Sanborn community through his presence in the classroom, in the community, and on his football, basketball, and rugby teams.  It has been an honor teaching Jason in Junior English and now in Senior English.  In the classroom, he is a critical thinker, asks questions that stimulate discussion, and articulately communicates his ideas both written and verbally.  This year he has shown tremendous improvement in his ability to write a narrative, analyze literature and film, and debate topics of interest through research.  He is able to meet deadlines with assignments that are of the utmost quality.  Jason's other teachers describe him as funny, polite, and a pleasure to have in class.  Ms. Lang describes him as having "an honest way about him, which makes it very easy for anyone to talk to him".

When Jason isn't using his time to bring positive energy to the classroom, he is extending his learning through an internship at MNR Technology in Newfields.  Jason has learned how to design and manufacture equipment and parts for various products.  Through this internship, he has strengthened his desire to study mechanical engineering in college.  He speaks very highly of the skills he has acquired during his internship.  He also participates in recreational sports.  He finds a lot of joy in playing rugby for the Essex County Youth Rugby Bulldogs.

Jason is kind, dependable, and respectful.  There is no doubt that he will go on to do great things.  He is looking forward to studying engineering at one of the many colleges he has applied to.  So far, he has applied to Clarkson University, University of Maine, University of New Hampshire, Roger Williams, University of Utah, and Western New England University.  I look forward to hearing about his future achievements in college and the workplace.

Extended FLT Day
Friday, January 19, 2018

Dear Parents/Guardians,
In order to provide students with every possible opportunity for students to stay up to date in all classes, we are offering a modified class schedule on Friday, January 19, 2018. This is a rescheduled date from December 22 because school was cancelled that day due to the weather. On this day, we will run three 52-minute extended Focused Learning Time (FLT) periods.
FLT is typically offered as part of our regular schedule each day and provides an opportunity for students to engage in personalized intervention, extension, and enrichment. Please understand that attendance at these extended FLT sessions is mandatory for all students who have been assigned by a teacher to attend.
Students who are not assigned to any FLT sessions by a teacher will not be required to attend these extended focused learning opportunities. Please be aware, however, that bus transportation will only be available at the end of the regular school day at 2:10PM.
Your child will be notified by their teacher(s) by Thursday, January 18 at the latest if they will be required to stay for any and all of the extended FLT sessions. If you have any questions or concerns about your child's grades, please contact your child's teacher(s) by email (preferable) or by phone at (603) 642-3341.
The schedule for January 19 will be as follows:

School Counseling Team Update
A Message By Counseling Director Heidi Leavitt

The school counseling office is a hub of activity for any high school and SRHS is no different.  Many of our seniors are receiving exciting news in the mail and in their emails about college acceptances and even more thrilling is that many of those acceptances are coming with merit scholarships!  They have worked hard and are certainly deserving of these monetary recognitions.  It is the best part of the day when one of them comes bursting in to tell us about their successes!  If you happen to be in the school, stop by our 'wall of stars' to see where their acceptances are coming from so far.

Also in December, the counselors handed out the PSAT score reports to our sophomores and juniors.  During the presentation, the students were given an explanation of their score reports, how it might translate to an SAT score and more importantly how to increase their scores through Khan Academy.  All juniors will be using Khan academy in their English and Math classes between now and the SAT on March 21st.  The SAT is now used as the state reporting test for NH.  Studies have shown that investing 20 hours of time on Khan Academy can increase a student's score by 115 points!  Students in grade 9 will be receiving their score reports and explanation on January 17th.  If your child did not share their score report, please contact their counselor and he/she will be able to email you a copy.

Did you know that 9th graders are now eligible to apply to the local Career and Technical Education (CTE) centers based on a recent change in state law?  For SRHS students, our local CTE is Seacoast School of Technology (SST).  On January 12th, SST will be here to present to our 9th and 10th graders and then these same students will be visiting the SST site on January 25th and January 23rd.  Freshmen also recently participated in a learning styles inventory to assess how they learn best and Sophomores will be participating in a career interest inventory in the next few weeks.

It is never too early to start thinking about the college process and on January 29th at 6:00 pm, we will be holding our Freshman/Sophomore college information night.  This is a great opportunity to learn about college visits, the common application process and the importance of course selection.  In addition to the counseling department's college information nights, the SRHS PTO is hosting a Strategies for College night on January 17th at 6:30 in the library.  You can learn what your EFC (estimated family contribution) means and how to find affordable colleges.

Finally, we will be hosting the New Hampshire Higher Education Assistance Foundation (NHHEAF) on January 18th to help individual families to complete their FAFSA.  If you are interested in an appointment, please call the counseling office at 642-3600 to schedule an appointment (time slots fill up quickly). As always, if you have any questions or concerns regarding your student, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.
