Our Mission Statement

We of Joy Lutheran Church foster
grace-filled relationships with Christ
through worship, fellowship, and service.

Gospel:  John 14:15-21
Jesus does not leave his followers orphaned. Through the Holy Spirit Jesus comes to abide with his disciples of every generation. As Pentecost draws near, we are reminded that the risen Christ dwells in us as the Spirit of truth. We receive this Spirit in baptism and pray that in our gathering around the Lord's table the Spirit will transform us to be the body of the risen Christ in the world.

Our Intern for 2017-18
We will once again have an intern this year and will once again be sharing that teaching role with Lutheran Church of Hope in Anchorage.  Our Intern is Kate Drefke, a student at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in Berkeley, California.  Similar to the pattern we used before, Kate will split her time during the week between the two congregations.  On Sundays, she will spend two Sundays with us, then two with LCOH.  Kate arrives around August 1 st and her first Sunday at Joy Lutheran will be August 6 th .

Some needs we have before she arrives:

1.  Internship Committee

We need four people who would be willing to serve as part of the Internship Committee.  The Committee meets once per month and works closely with the Intern helping her to set goals, discern ministry gifts, and generally help here integrate into the life of each congregation. Please let Pastor Martin know if you would be interested in serving.

2.  Housing

We are actively looking for an apartment or similar housing for Kate. A small, two-bedroom place would be ideal. It is suggested that this not be attached to the house of a member of either congregation. Kate does have cats, but she assures me that they are well trained and have not been a problem. If you have leads on a place in either ER or Anchorage, let Pastor Martin know.

Summertime at Joy!
As the long days of sunshine remind us, summer is approaching. At Joy, this brings activities for which we need volunteers. So, if you like to:

Grow vegetables! Our raised beds will need planting, weeding, and harvesting.

Tend the lawn! The grass around the church will need mowing on a regular basis and other TLC.

Have breakfast! Our Sunday Faith Family Breakfasts will begin after Memorial Day. Each week we need someone to prepare breakfast to be shared after worship (anything from muffins and coffee to where your imagination takes you), as we enjoy the meal in fellowship.

If you are interested, please sign up on the sheets in the narthex. If you are interested in being the coordinator for any of these activities (this does NOT mean doing it all yourself!), please contact Jan in the church office or Henry Huntington, the Council president (hph@alaska.net). Many thanks! three seasonal

Joy of Reading Book Club
The next Book Club Meeting will be our 7 th Anniversary Party at the beautiful Nancy Lake home of Gerry Norene.  It's also a sleepover for those who are able to stay.  The book is The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh.

Please bring ideas on good book club books for upcoming meetings.  We will be making some future selections around the campfire.

No meeting in July - we are too busy embracing Alaska in the summer!
