Baccalaureate Mass
The Baccalaureate Mass was lovely Monday night. It was held in the Garces quad under white bistro lights with several local priests helping Msgr. Perry Kavookjian celebrate Mass. A big Garces thank you to Michelle Pisano, Kolleen Alexander, and Lisa Andrew who
set up the reception table and decorated the quad with flowers, luminaries, and candles. Our campus looked beautiful thanks to their hard work and generous spirit.

Salutatorian Kyra Sales and Valedictorian Anastasia Drulias |
Congratulations to our Salutatorian, Kyra Sales, and our Valedictorian, Anastasia Drulias! At our graduation ceremony, only two students have the honor of speaking to their classmates, parents, faculty members, and everyone else in the audience. As the salutatorian, Kyra gave the invocation and it was heartfelt and beautifully done. Anastasia had the privilege of speaking for the entire class and she gave a personal, thoughtful, humorous, and lovely speech that truly captured the heart of the Class of 2017, also known as the "backbone". Both young ladies clearly loved their years at Garces and it was reflected in their words and in their demeanor. Great job Rams!

Hall of Honor Inductee
Tom Anchordoquy '65
|
|
|
Principal Myka Peck, Alumni Board Chairman Jeremy Tobias & Tom Anchordoquy |
Below is the bio of Tom Anchordoquy from the Hall of Honor Awards banquet program. Tom was introduced to the audience by Gary Ogilvie '55. Gary was Tom's teacher and coach at Garces, and accordingly to "Coach O", Tom is "the best athlete to ever come out of Garces".
Tom Anchordoquy Hall of Honor Bio
Tom Anchordoquy attended St. Francis School and graduated from Garces Memorial High School in 1965. In his junior year, he was a member of the Garces basketball team that defeated BHS for the City Championship. As a senior, Tom was selected as the outstanding lineman on the football team, along with receiving the Harry Coffee award as the outstanding player on the basketball and baseball teams. He was selected to the All Diocesan teams for football, basketball and baseball. Tom received the Dante Alighieri award as the outstanding student athlete at Garces. Tom was a member of Legion of Mary, the president of the Letterman Club as well as senior class president.
After Garces, Tom served as a Sargent in the US Army and served in Viet Nam in 1968 and 1969. Upon his discharge from the service, he attended Fresno State University, graduating with a degree in Business Administration.
Tom came back to Bakersfield and began a very successful career in commercial real estate. In 1987 with Mark Smith and Scott Underhill, he co-founded one of the most successful commercial real estate firms in the San Joaquin Valley, ASU & Associates. Tom has been a tireless advocate for Garces. Almost everyone who works at ASU has a Garces connection - they either sent their children to Garces or are Garces alumni. All six principals have a Garces connection. Tom retired from ASU & Associates in 2013.
He is currently a board member of Mid State Development, an SBA lender, as well as board member of the Bob Elias Hall of Fame.
Tom's three children, Michael ('99), Annemarie ('01) and Sara ('05), all graduated from Garces, as did Michael's wife Ashley Waterman ('99) and Annemarie's husband Tom Brast ('99). Tom was an avid supporter of Garces while his children were at Garces and he still finds time to come out and root for the Rams. Tom has supported the Fall BBQ, the Garces Gala, and played in numerous Monsignor Leddy Golf Tournaments. He also served on the Garces Memorial Alumni Board for three years and was instrumental in the Garces Fallen Heroes Plaque that honors Garces alumni who lost their lives while in service of our country.
Tom and his wife Karen enjoy caring for their animals and spending time with their five grandchildren. In his spare time, Tom enjoys watching sports and playing golf.

Garces Man & Woman of the Year
Mark Brown & Susan Walker
Mark "Brownie" Brown and Susan Walker were honored at the Msgr. Leddy Golf Classic dinner on Thursday May 11th. The tradition of awarding the "Man of the Year" and recently "Woman of the Year" honors started with the Msgr. Leddy Golf Tournament 44 years ago. It is given to an individual or individuals who are strong advocates for our school and who have made notable contributions of time, talent and resources to Garces for our students. Both Mr. Brown and Coach Walker bleed Garces green! Mark has been a long time faculty member, parent of two Garces graduates, coach, and the "Voice of the Rams" season after season for Garces football. Coach Walker, a long time cross country coach, parent of two Garces graduates, and all around great supporter, "walks the walk", or in her case "runs the run", when it comes to coaching her student athletes. Susan can be seen encouraging her runners on their daily training sessions by running along side them stride for stride. Thank you both for your commitment to our students.

Ms. Clarke's Class of 2018
Poetry Superstars
Below is the next set of poems written by the Class of 2018 during their sophomore year.
Ode to Kobe Bryant
By: Harman Sangha
He is determined as a hardworking man,
His shot is as wet as the Niagara Falls,
His is as strong as an anchor,
He is as smart as Albert Einstein,
He is as athletic as an Olympic athlete.
Kobe won five championships,
He is the second player to make 81 points or higher in a game,
Kobe is important because he made me like basketball.
He changed the whole league of the NBA,
Kobe taught me that nothing can stop you from your dreams
Ode to Pearls
By: Monica Uriaz
A pearl, small, like a drop of water,
And utterly beautiful, glistening,
Like the oceans it was made in.
They are common
But each is unique and spectacularly wonderful
In its very own way.
Ode to my Phone
By: George Tang
My IPhone, my IPhone, my super magical IPhone!
You look so pretty, like a woman with dressing in gold.
Every time I see your golden body,
Your crystal screen, really inspires me.
It looks like a diamond, and feels like water flow.
Oh! My IPhone!
You work perfectly.
Did you see the textbooks beside?
They are so fatty, weighing like pigs.
But you are so light, light like feathers.
Your size is just as big as a baby, sleeping in my pocket.
The screen displays fantasy.
Just through this little toy.
I experienced the most happiness I had never been given.
You are my friend.
You are my life.
Without you, I will be like a faded flower.
Living with myself.
Ten Little Things About Him
By: Zabrina Thein
He is the morning sky on a sunny day.
It almost seems forbidden to be with him.
He is the smell of coffee on a rainy day.
His appearance like freshly, blooming flowers.
His words taste as sweet honey.
His voice so soothing, like a gentle breeze in my ears.
His touch as soft as clouds.
A thousand angel kisses prickling my skin when I'm with him.
Movie night at my house with him.
The joyful laughter of happiness echoing in the room.
He makes everything around us disappear, as if its only us in existence.
The sky smiles and winks at me.
Now it doesn't seem forbidden, but only right.
Mt. Sac
By: Aaron Padilla
The path flies at me like a bullet in the wind,
To me its terrors are set.
Through my feet I feel it raise and lower, twist and turn, make itself course.
The piercing thud of a fallen victim fills one's ears,
Aroma from its trees make me calm, but slower.
My saving grace, the Sun, wakes me up with its hurtful beatings.
Its touch wears me down, makes me want to go all the more fast.
The site of the finish line like the smell of a metal somewhere far,
Coach Olson pushing me along running through a canyon that day,
Though there is no canyon.
The endless pass a relentless kept pushing at us
We flew over the ground at light speed,
As the mountain held us back with amazing power.
All the while the path throw the selfishness on the scorched fall day.
