During this final month of the 2016-17 school, our Lancers have continued to demonstrate academic rigor as they complete Advanced Placement testing and prepare for finals. Lake Park administered a record-setting number of AP exams again this year with 1,913. Thanks to the 2016 AP testing participation and graduation rates, Lake Park earned another national ranking.

The Washington Post announced the 2017 List of America's Most Challenging High Schools, and Lake Park High School was ranked #25 out of 65 Illinois high schools! This recent announcement demonstrates an improvement from our #32 ranking on the 2016 list. According to The Washington Post, just more than 12 percent of the approximate 22,000 U.S. public high schools earned placement on this year's Challenge Index list. National accolades like this can only be achieved through our collective dedication to teaching and learning.

Today, the Class of 2017 is completing their last official full day of attendance and celebrating this milestone with special activities including a picnic and assembly. Students with grades of C, D, or F will return next week for finals on May 22 and May 23.

We were proud to recognize our distinguished seniors during the annual Scholarship and Awards night hosted on May 10. Congratulations to our graduating Lancers for earning such an impressive list of scholarships and accolades.

On Thursday, May 25, Lake Park will celebrate the 60th Commencement Ceremony recognizing 633 graduates who will join our alumni community known as "Lancers for Life." The ceremony will take place at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates. Families can access more details, including a schedule, directions and parking lot information on the graduation website.

Thank you for your continuous support of Lake Park students and staff. May you have a safe, enjoyable and restful summer break! We look forward to all that the new school year will bring when students return on Wednesday, August 23.

This past winter Luke was a State qualifier for the wrestling program.  The boys gymnastics coaching staff includes head coach, Tim Whelan, and assistant coach Rick Orna.
Pride in Performance
Congratulations to our Pride in Performance winners for the third grading period:

East Campus
Academics: Seena Thomas is always prepared for class. She takes the initiative to ask questions and makes sure that she is on task, even though she is a very strong and able student. Her questions and participation are beneficial to the class as a whole. She shows incredible maturity for her age.

Achievement
: Johana Reys is an excellent student in class. She is always attentive and a hard worker. Her teachers appreciate her politeness and the kindness she shows to her fellow students.

Activities: Connor McAdams has been a member of the Fishing Club all year. He is loyal to the club, has a caring attitude about others and genuinely likes to fish. In addition to being a good student, Connor also sings in the choir and participated in the Lancer Cafe as a host as part of his Culinary Skills elective. He has made a great transition to high school by being a well-rounded student.

Athletics: Andelyn Granskog competed at the indoor track conference meet and broke the school record by eight inches! As a State qualifier in the 100m high hurdles, she will be competing this weekend at Eastern Illinois University. Andie is also a state qualifying gymnast for both her freshman and sophomore years.

Athletics: Adam Wiatr has emerged as a key contributor to the boys Track & Field team. He set a goal earlier this year and has been working hard ever since to achieve it. He has put in extra time and done additional workouts on his own to make sure that he was prepared for the season. His hard work paid off as he won the 400 meter dash at the Dupage Valley Conference indoor conference meet, an achievement that has not been earned by a Lancer in 10 years!

West Campus
Academics: Casey Samagalsky is a phenomenal academic talent. Her powerful combination of natural ability, desire to succeed, and work ethic put her in a highly elite group at Lake Park. She has pursued one of the most challenging curriculums available to any student and has never received a grade lower than "A." In addition, Casey is a master of time management and possesses a unique set of interests outside of school.

Achievement: Ryan Pries has been a leader on the Math Team all year. He enjoys math and seeks out additional problems to work on to prepare for math contests. During practices, he helps and encourages other students to learn the topics and problems being studied. His hard work paid off finishing in the top five percent nationwide on the AMC-12 exam to qualify for the AIME math contest. He also qualified for the Illinois State Math contest in two events.

Activities: Miles DeWaele demonstrated amazing leadership skills in stepping up to become the captain of the Rube Goldberg team this year. His drive is a primary reason the team was able to win State and compete in Nationals. He encouraged the team to stay motivated and keep working toward their goal of building an awesome machine. His positive attitude kept students involved despite the long hours required. Miles provided leadership, guidance and encouragement for all.

Athletics: Garrett Fant was a key player on the Varsity basketball team both this year and last year. This season he averaged 19 points, four assists and five rebounds per game. He was named All Conference, All-Glenbard West Holiday Tourney and was nominated for All State. Beyond his leadership on the team, Garrett overcome personal battles this year in ways that mirror his resilience and determination on the court. As a student, his sense of self-awareness and grit allow him to grow and improve drastically from one semester to the next.
Gene Haas Foundation Awards Grant Money
The Gene Haas Foundation has awarded Lake Park High School a $7,500 grant for post secondary educational training.

The Career to Technical Education department plans to use the grant to award senior students scholarships for their school of choice. The focus for the grant is to train students on computer numerical control (CNC) machines and to help close the skills gap in U.S. manufacturing jobs.

This spring, four students pursuing careers in manufacturing, machining or engineering were each awarded $1,000 scholarships. The funds will be used to offer the same scholarship award in 2017-18 for graduating seniors.

Lancer Elected Vice President for Statewide Student Council
Student Council recently attended the Illinois Association of Student Councils annual State Convention. Established in 1934, the Illinois Association of Student Councils was founded by a group of educators who wanted to create an organization for student leaders that would encourage them to practice the democratic process, citizenship and service while fostering an exchange of ideas and problem solving strategies in Illinois' schools.

Today, nearly 80 years later, it has become the premier student leadership organization in Illinois. Each year they serve thousands of students and advisors from member schools all across the state. The organization is recognized by the National Association of Student Councils (NASC), and offers leadership training experiences for members throughout the year.

The governing body is the IASC Executive Board, elected by member schools, and consists of an Executive Director, an Associate Executive Director, seven student officers (President, First Vice President, Second Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Convention Secretary and Assistant Communications Director), and four additional adult members (Communications Director, Workshop Director, First Year Advisor at Large and Second Year Advisor at Large).

Congratulations to junior Brianna McAloon who ran for the position of Second Vice President on the IASC State Executive Board and won. She will represent Lake Park for the 2017-18 school year with the support of StuCo sponsors Lyndsey Gistis, Jen McSweeny, Amanda Perna and Taylor Severino.

Medical Forms Required by the School Nurse
An Illinois health law requires that any student entering 12th grade must show proof of being adequately immunized against meningitis. If your student has not yet met this health requirement, parents should schedule a doctor's appointment for their student and complete the Grade 12 health requirement prior to senior year. Documentation accepted will be a note signed by your health care provider with the date the vaccine was administered or an electronic record of vaccine administration stamped and signed by the doctor's office. Proof of vaccination is being accepted now in the West Campus nurse's office. For more information about providing proof of the meningitis vaccination for senior year, visit the School Nurse page on the district website or call the West Campus health office at (630) 295-5335.

Ninth grade physical and updated immunizations are due in the East Campus nurse's office by  Thursday, July 27. Every ninth grade student in the state of Illinois is subject to these state requirements. The Certificate of Child Health Examination form was mailed home to all pre-registered students in the District and is the only form accepted for the requirement. For freshman year, the ninth grade physical satisfies the sports physical requirement if your student participates in sports during the 2017-18 school year. A separate sports physical is not required for freshman year, but is required for sophomores, juniors and seniors who wish to participate in a school sponsored sport.
