Special Education Receives Slight Increase in FY 2017
[Source:  Council for Exceptional Children]

Last week the U.S. Senate passed a $1.1 trillion funding bill, which adverted a government shutdown and will fund the government through September 2017. The U.S. Department of Education's overall budget is $71.6 billion, a cut of $60 million from fiscal year (FY) 2016. This bill was agreed upon by republicans and democrats after lengthy and contentious negotiations resulting in a bipartisan bill. The bipartisan bill does not include many of the domestic policy spending cuts recommended by President Trump and eliminates any policy riders in the education budget. In addition, there is no new federal choice program included, as proposed by President Trump.

In her doctoral dissertation, Lilli Kimppa studied neural response dynamics to new words over brief exposure. She measured the neural activation of Finnish-speaking volunteers with electroencephalography (EEG) during auditory tasks in which existing Finnish words, and non-words with Finnish and non-native phonology, were repeated.

Preschoolers' Story Comprehension Similar for Print & Digital Books
[Source:  Reading Rockets]

The content of a children's book-not its form as a print book or a digital book-predicts how well children understand a story, finds a new study by NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. The findings, presented on May 1 at the American Educational Research Association's annual meeting in San Antonio, suggest that both digital stories and reading storybooks in person present opportunities for learning

Autism Linked to Maternal Grandmother Smoking in Pregnancy
[Source:  Medical News Today]

Autism, characterized by repetitive behaviors and difficulty interacting socially, appears to be on the rise.

Much of this increase is thought to be due to better detection rates and greater awareness. However, many scientists believe that environmental or lifestyle factors might also play a role.
A recent study, carried out by researchers from the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom, looked into three generations of data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), a long-term data collection project carried out by the University that began in the early 1990s.

OT Corner:  Foundations for Visual Perception (Activity ideas)
By: Melanie Lambert OTR/L

A.M. Skeffington, an American optometrist known to some as "the father of behavioral optometry", believed that vision cannot be separated from the total individual nor from any of the sensory systems because it is integrated into all human performance. His model describes how visual processes mesh with auditory input, proprioception, kinesthesia and body sense. Visual perception is, therefore, not obtained from vision alone. It comes from combining visual skills with all other sensory modalities, including the vestibular and proprioceptive systems.

And they came away with one clear, strong message: Kids who attend public preschool programs are better prepared for kindergarten than kids who don't.
