Greetings one and all. Let's hope that the Spring Monsoon Season is behind us, and that fair skies and light winds are in our future. I went to Bill Martin Field today, May 18, and I was happy to see that the Charles River is behaving itself and our field and access road are in good shape. I wish I could say the same for our wind sock. It has suffered many indignities due to nasty, shifting winds and is in need of some repair.
Our club has been reaching out to try to be more visible and thus we have been involved in putting on R/C modeling demonstrations at various places. Mickey Callahan, Jamie McDonough and I were involved in a Boy Scout Camporee at the Plymouth Airport on Saturday, May 6th. We were prepared to do flying demonstrations and-hands-on buddy box flight training in a safe spot off of a taxiway at the airport. Too bad Mother Nature did not want us to fly, as we had significant rain all day long. At least we got to answer a lot of questions by some very curious Boy Scouts and Mickey and I were able to raffle off a bunch of swag to some very eager youngsters.
On Mother's Day, I attended a Mother's Day Family Day cookout for a small religious congregation in Natick, whose coordinator found my name on Facebook. I was able to speak to them for about thirty minutes, demonstrating a variety of different planes that I thought might draw some interest, and I ended my presentation by flying a Night Vapor around inside, and then I flew my Twisted Hobbies Crack Yak 55 outside with my boom box playing the Doobie Brothers, "Steamer Lane Breakdown." Mark Schultz was my wing man, and brought his flight simulator along and gave many youngsters a chance to use it. The presentation was very successful and very much appreciated. I kept reminding them that if they want more they can come by our field any time that our gate is open.
Beware of Ticks! I went into the woods for a rescue mission a few weeks ago, and I found six of those little blighters on my clothing.
Remember to keep Saturday, June 3 open, as I will be doing my first ever fun fly that day. I am attempting to make it balanced so that both E pilots and Nitro pilots have an equal chance to do well during the contest. There will be no entry fee and there will be prizes!
The South Shore Radio Controllers in Bridgewater have announced that Bill Martin Annual Multi-Club Fly in will be held on Saturday, September 23. More details to come later.
Respectfully, John Holcomb, Vice President MMAC.
