NWABR Marched for Science in Seattle

You Did It!
We send our sincere thanks to the 58 donors who helped raise $25,000 over the last few months. Because of their generosity, NWABR will now receive a $25,000 challenge grant from the Dean Witter Foundation. These funds are already being used to increase the reach and diversity of students participating in NWABR's educational programs. This year alone the funds have provided:
- Outreach to middle schools in Bremerton and Kent about the Biomedical Research and My Life essay, poster and video competition
- Scholarship for upward bound students attending NWABR's summer CampBioMed
- Contributions to schools in Eastern WA that will allow them to fully participate in the BioExpo
If you did not have a chance to contribute to the challenge grant, there are two other opportunities to support NWABR's educational work during May: give BIG and the Speak Up for Research Gala.

Give Big is a program that is run locally by the Seattle Foundation. Donors make a contribution to NWABR through the GiveBIG website on or before May 10, 2017 and the Seattle Foundation will match a portion of those donations to support our work to promote biomedical science in schools and to young people.

2017 Speak Up for Research Gala
At the May 25th Gala you will enjoy great food, fun activities like a wine toss and Dessert Dash and support the incredible member and education programs of NWABR. This event is a low key fundraiser for NWABR and is a PERFECT opportunity to celebrate science!
When you attend the Gala on May 25th you will honor this year's Alvin J. Thompson Awardee, Dr. Steve Reed, founder and CEO of Seattle's own Infectious Disease Research Institute. At IDRI, Steve's work on intracellular infections and vaccine development & treatments for infectious diseases like tuberculosis and leishmaniasis ensure improved health in third world peoples.
You will also honor Pride Foundation on behalf of Ric Weiland, this year's Buster and Nancy D. Alvord Awardee. Ric tasked Pride Foundation with breathing life into his bequest to use science to make a difference for the LGBTQ community. This award focuses on collaborations and ground breaking research made possible through Ric's bequest to ensure scientific, legal and cultural transformation around HIV.

- Make a donation through giveBIG and in the comments, note you want to attend the Gala

Thank you to the 166 people who responded to our recent survey about offering a Clinical Research Professional Conference in partnership with the Pacific Northwest Chapter of the Association for Clinical Research Professionals (PNWACRP). We are proud to offer this new conference on Monday October 2, 2017 at Volney Auditorium at Virginia Mason Medical Center.
The newest of NWABR's conference lineup will address:
- Communication for successful trials (site qualifications, start-up, ongoing activity and closeout)
- Legal & Regulatory updates, e.g., single IRB and new rule, ICH E6 (R2)
- Sponsor or FDA audits
- Building and retaining quality programs, e.g., handoff's, amendments

Brain-computer interface (BCI) research is wonderfully promising for applications in medicine--want to operate your wheelchair using your mind, learn about personality, talk to a computer without 'speaking'?--but this emerging technology is intertwined with ethical concerns. Who owns this data? Who is responsible for malfunctioning BCI? Will those who use BCI be stigmatized?

Apply for the Michael D. Hayre Fellowship for Public Outreach
Americans for Medical Progress (AMP)
