For the  parents and families of St. Therese Chinese Catholic School

Dear Parents,

The month of May is such an exciting and busy time here at St. Therese. May Crowning in the school and parish, the Junior High Cruise, All School Fun Day, Talent Show, Spirit Week, lots of fun Faculty Follies (Did you see me in my Princess Leia outfit?)...not to mention the graduation excitement that fills the air. It is hard to believe we will soon begin our annual traditions of passing the torch to our 7th graders and saying goodbye to another graduating class. I get sentimental every year.

This month brings in another wave of excitement from our amazing academic accomplishments that fill our newsletter each month. Congratulations goes out to Ms. Hang for a spectacular showing in this year's Catholic Math League! Our 8th graders were named NATIONAL champions in ALGEBRA among all entries - elementary and high school. Students in grades 3 - 8 did an amazing job both at the division and national level!

Stay tuned for fun announcements regarding our talented students performing at the Thompson Center (May 16th) and the Daley Center for Asian Heritage Month (date to be announced soon), as well as us hosting an international school visit with educators from Santa Laurensia Elementary School (Indonesia) on May 17th!

Peace and joy to all of you during this blessed month.

Blessings,
Ms. Cavallone
Principal

St. Therese School and Students Excel
in Catholic Math League National Competition

St. Therese students participated in the  Catholic Math League National Competition this year and did exceedingly well, improving over our stellar performance last year.

For this Math competition, students take a series of four math tests throughout the year. Test scores are then averaged and compared with other Catholic students and schools Nationally and by Division (a multi-state geographic region, such as the Midwest).

See below for a listing of school and individual student awards.

HOLY WEEK 2017
Easter Vigil

St. Therese parish welcomed several new families into the Catholic faith during the Easter Vigil. It was a beautiful mass filled with the joy which Easter brings us.

Living Stations of the Cross

Thank you to the 7th and 8th graders for portraying the living stations of the cross this year with such passion, dedication and prayerfulness.

Holy Thursday

On Holy Thursday, two bus loads of St. Therese students, staff, and parish members visited seven area churches. "This year was made special for a couple of reasons. First, Christian Shui, a former St. Therese student and current seminarian, had just returned from the Holy Land and as a result had some great stories to share with our youth.  Second, the weather was great and therefore the kids had a great time," commented Thomas Howard, Director of Religious Education.

Justice Laura Liu
Honored and Remembered with a Statue

A large group of family, friends and dignitaries helped celebrate the life and contributions of Justice Laura Liu at a statue unveiling in Ping Tom Park on April 15, 2017. Michael Kasper, Justice Laura's husband, presided over the event. St. Therese dancers performed for all who attended the memorial dedication. To view a video of the dedication, click here.

The Justice Laura Liu Scholarship Fund was established for St. Therese students in honor of Justice Liu. The Scholarship Fund has raised over $200,000 since being established in the Spring of 2016. Scholarships are awarded to Asian American students who demonstrate need and for whom English is not their first language. We welcome continued contributions to the scholarship fund here.

Samuela Kosipa Receives
 Daniel Murphy Scholarship

Samuela Kosipa, 8th grader, is a 2017 recipient of a Daniel Murphy Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to students who demonstrate strong academic ability, financial need, outstanding character and leadership potential.

As a recipient of this scholarship, Samuela, who will be attending Morgan Park Academy, will receive not only tuition assistance from the Daniel Murphy Scholarship Fund, but also four years of free tutoring, personalized college counseling, and programming that will help her succeed in high school and beyond.

Samuela had to go through an extremely competitive process - including a written application and interviews - to be selected among a large pool of applicants.

Congratulations Samuela!
St. Bridget Cross Project at St. Therese

Thanks to a creative art project coordinated by Mr. Filipiak during religion classes, our primary children now have deeper appreciation for Christ's cross.

"Crucifixes with Jesus' crucified body, though popular with many adults from different cultures, simply do not work well with our youngest students here at St. Therese. I took my inspiration from the creativity of St. Bridget, who many years ago made simple crosses out of common things like wheat and hay," shared Mr. Filipiak. Colored pipe cleaners served as the art material for Mr. Flip's class cross project. "The different colors, shapes and sizes of each cross we worked together to make remind us how, though we are all different shapes, sizes, colors, we are all the beautiful image of God."

Cameran Moy Receives
"Made by Girls" Scholarship

Cameran Moy, 7th grader, is a 2017 recipient of a Made By Girls Scholarship from the Digital Media Academy.  Cameran was one of 5 girls chosen from the United States to receive a tuition scholarship for a STEM summer class. The Digital Media Academy has a year-round program and summer camps offering hands on technology education at universities across the nation. The Made By Girls program reinforces STEM learning and is led by female role models including educators, industry leaders, and creators. They provide an empowering curriculum and student led projects which puts young girls in charge of technology and their future.  Cameran will be taking her chosen course, Adventures in Game Design, at the University of Chicago this July. Congratulations Cameran!
