FASHION TIPS

MATCHING SHOES TO PANTS

Straight-leg Pants  For proper balance, go for a slim-soled shoe. If you wear high heels, a stiletto or princess heel with a pointed toe can make your legs look deliciously long. If you prefer lower shoes, look for one that is not too clunky or try a flat shoe.

Wide-leg Trousers To balance their width, wide-leg pants require shoes with a medium heel; avoid anything too high or spindly, which may make you look off-kilter. A stacked heel with a rounded toe is a safe bet. A boot is also a good look, Make sure your pants do not fall so far over your shoes that you are in danger of tripping. If you prefer lower shoes, avoid anything too flat, or it can make you appear dumpy. Wear a sandal or slip-on with a substantial sole and toe.

Cropped Pants  High heels rarely work with cropped pants. Instead, stick to medium or low heel heights. If the pants hit mid-calf and are tapered, a ballet or other type of flat shoe or sandal is appropriate. For mid-calf trouser-width pants, a flat boot (as long as pants cover the tops of the boots when you sit) or something like a slim-soled loafer or small delicate heel mule can work well too.

MAKING CLOTHING AND ACCESSORIES LAST LONGER

  • Keep knee-high boots in good condition.  Plastic boot shapers specifically designed to support boots will protect them from losing their shape. On a tight budget? You can also use rolled up magazines to get the job done.
  • Do not leave belts in the belt loops of pants, skirts or dresses when hanging these items in your closet. The weight of the belt in the loops of hanging items can cause unnecessary wear and tear of your garments. Also, the belt can become distorted and permanently disfigured. Instead, hang belts on belt rings (i.e. circular hanger with an opening for easy access and storage of belts) alongside your clothes.
  • Belts can also be rolled for protection. For belts with non-traditional buckles that may prevent them from being hung in your closet, neatly roll them up and secure them with an elastic band so that they are protected and easy to store in drawers, shoe boxes, and other storage compartments.
  • To reduce stained clothing, get dressed in the right order. If you use make-up, hairspray, perfume, or cologne, put these on first before getting dressed. Let these products dry for at least 5 minutes before putting on your clothes. This really works!
  • Stock up on disposable underarm shields. If perspiration is a problem, disposable underarm shields can be a lifesaver. Not only do they protect your tops, but they also help protect your self-esteem.
  • Blot, Do Not Rub. Never rub a stain; blot instead. Rubbing breaks surface fibers, which lose dye and become abraded. It is best to take better garments to a dry cleaner immediately without blotting or rubbing.
