Surprise Scavenger Hunt!

The whole school was treated to a big surprise this morning! We all gathered in the gym to learn that we would be going on a scavenger hunt at Haverford College. We broke off into groups with our partners and headed over to the College. All groups were given  crayons, pencils, and clipboards.  The goal was to be outside, have a good time with partners, and learn a few things about trees. Some of the activities were to find a pinecone, make bark rubbings, measure the circumference of a tree with your arms, and find a conifer and figure out its age. One group even made a snowman.  Everyone met up in the cafeteria to enjoy some hot apple cider to top off a fun time.  Click here   for photos.
Writing Celebration

Grades 1 and 2 have been working on their writing celebration journals. They have been learning about how writers get their ideas. They wrote several drafts, had them edited, and then published them. The Kindergarten students were invited to hear the stories read aloud by the writers. Each student got to read their wonderful illustrated stories to a captivated Kindergarten audience.  Click here   for photos.
Dance Performance

Tr. Rae's dance club gave a special final dance performance to friends and family. They danced to the song "Better When Dancing." Students showed off their movement, dance, and exercise skills learned in LARKs club and did a terrific job.  Click here for photos.
Heritage House Activities

Heritage House was busy with many activities last week. Some of the younger students participated in pajama day. Nursery school was busy with their partners reading stories and coloring gingerbread men with Tr. Amy for art class. Preschool made gingerbread cookies and learned about the St. Nicholas Day tradition of leaving shoes by the fireplace or outside. When St. Nicholas visits, he fills the shoes with treats. They put their shoes in the hallway, went outside to play, and returned to find treats in their shoes! Kindergarten made boats out of various materials and tested if they would float in a tub of water. Click here for photos.
Art Class

Grade 1 is learning about hand building with clay in art class. Tr. Amy read the story "The Tea Party in the Woods" and each student chose a forest animal from the book to build for their sculptures. A fox, deer, and rabbit were just some of the creations. They painted their animals which will get fired in the kiln and be finished soon. Click here for photos.
Special Guest, Marge Dawson

Former FSH trustee Marge Dawson came to speak to middle school students in grades 5/6 who are studying West Africa. Mrs. Dawson lived in Nigeria for five and half years in the early 70's where she acquired an extensive personal collection of artifacts. Included in the collection were a variety of crafted fabrics, a large calabash bowl, and of particular interest, carvings made from rainforest tree thorns. The thorn carvings depict daily life activities like weaving, playing mancala, and hair braiding. Thank you to Mrs. Dawson for sharing these treasures!   Click here for photos.
