Trends come and go. Hot holiday gifts come and go (Remember Furbees?). One thing is guaranteed to bring joy to your world, year after year after year: the joy of caring for a real, living animal. You can double that joy by adopting a pet from a shelter. You'll be receiving the same love and real interactivity that only a treasured pet can give, with the added satisfaction that you have reset the life of a special animal whose circumstances have been adversely affected. Feel great about your new pet--and yourself. ADOPT a pet from your local animal shelter this season.

SANTA PAWS at the Feed Barn

Santa comes to The Feed Barn a bit earlier than usual this year. On Saturday, December 3 , you can bring your pet--be it dog, cat, or reindeer--to get his or her picture taken with the best Santa in the state. A-PAL's Santa is especially great with animals, as the images reveal. As always, Santa Paws benefits A-PAL Humane Society, whose presence in the community makes such a difference in the lives of our animals. See the ad below for more detail.

Holiday CRAFTS FAIR in Sutter Creek
Visit the Sutter Creek Auditorium December 2, 3 & 4 to browse great gift opportunities featuring local arts and crafts. Each year, ACAC & AC volunteer Elaine Hunter works tirelessly to assemble two booths full of great pet gifts, delicious homemade candies and baked goods, soft goods, jewelry, accessories, and a 'donation tree' for those deserving animals who find themselves at the shelter this holiday season. As always, all proceeds benefit The Rusty Fund ; an important resource set up by volunteers to pick up the slack for medical procedures, special food and equipment when the budgets for the shelter and A-PAL Humane Society fall short. Your purchases at this booth will do immeasurable good for the animals at ACAC's Adoption Center.

DONATE to keep them HOME
This is the time of year when we open our hearts and give generously to those in need, both human and animal. The Interfaith Food Bank reminds you that you can donate pet food as well as people food year round, either directly at the Food Bank (12181 Airport Drive), or at the many donation sites in the community. Look for the big donation boxes at many grocery stores, businesses, and agencies throughout the county, including ACAC & AC.
PAWS for LIFE: A very special commencement

On Friday, December 2, Paws for Life will have a graduation ceremony at Mule Creek State Prison for its very first class of four newly-minted Canine Good Citizens. The lucky dogs were all selected from the ranks at Amador County Animal Control & Adoption Center. This is how the program works, according to "CACorrections", on facebook:

In partnership with Karma Rescue, Paws for Life provides valuable training experience to the inmates participating in the program. The program provides an opportunity for inmates to contribute to society by giving its dogs the skills needed for successful placement into permanent homes. Paws for Life brings in rescued shelter dogs to live full-time with inmates. Over a 12-week cycle, inmates learn from Karma trainers how to train the dogs to acquire Canine Good Citizen certification. Once a dog earns this designation, his chances of successful adoption increases - as does Karma Rescue's ability to place another animal for the next training cycle.

Staff and volunteers at ACAC & AC are thrilled to congratulate this very special first Northern California graduating class.

DO YOU HAVE A GREAT ADOPTION STORY FROM OUR SHELTER?
We'd love to hear from you. Send your story, with photos if you have them, to Lisa Peterson.

Help us build our BARN
PHASE 2 of the original building plan for ACAC & AC's new facility called for a barn. That part of the plan was set aside once PHASE 1 was completed, until a recent endowment from the estate of a local and generous animal benefactor got things moving again. Specifications for the new barn are being reviewed now, but more money will be needed to get it built. If you would like to help, you can make a tax-deductible donation to the Amador County Community Foundation, and specify in writing that it is for the Amador County Animal Control BARN. Donations can also be made online at the Amador Community Foundation website.

If you have questions, contact the Foundation at 209.223.2148.

Thinking of being a VOLUNTEER?
If you would like to join the dedicated ranks of volunteers at Amador County Animal Control & Adoption Center, you can view or print a Volunteer Application here , on the Amador County Website.  Final applications must be submitted on the county's original pink form, so you will need to pick up an original at Amador County Animal Control & Adoption Center, 12340 Airport Road, in Martell. They will walk you through the process.

Note: Volunteering is good for your Heart, but the benefits don't stop there. One of our new volunteers has lost 16 pounds since she started walking dogs six months ago.

Funny? Beautiful? Adorable?
