INFORMATION FOR PARENTS -
THIRTEEN REASONS WHY
Many of you may have heard the buzz around the Netflix series, 13 Reasons Why.  It is based on the novel Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher.

Parents need to know the series is about the suicide of a high school student named, Hannah Baker.  It is told from the perspective of her friend, Clay, through thirteen cassette recordings Hannah made prior to her death.  Each recording details a traumatic event that led to Hannah making the decision to take her life.  Netflix did not hold anything back when filming the series.  There is more than one graphic scene of a student rape as well as Hannah’s suicide being shown in great detail.  There are also scenes involving drinking, drugs, and swearing.  While the series may open up many conversations surrounding the topic of suicide, it may also be very complex and confusing for middle school children.

If you have any concerns or questions about your child and this topic that you feel we can assist with at school, please feel free to contact our school counselors, Julie Milligan or Rob Ocker.  You can also find good resources for suicide prevention at the following links as well as on the LGMS counselor website:
