Spring Schedule
8:15 Traditional Worship   9:25 Faith Formation   10:15 Contemporary Worship  10:15 Sunday School

The last week of Sunday School is May 21
and we move to our summer schedule, of one worship service at 9:30am, on May 28

Psalm 84 says:
Even the sparrow finds a home,

and the swallow a nest for herself,
where she may lay her young,
at your altars, O Lord of hosts,
    my King and my God.
Happy are those who live in your house,
    ever singing your praise.

I guess the same is true for ducks. For some reason a mother duck decided a bunch of grass under the carport at church would be a great place to raise a family and is currently sitting on a nest of eggs there.  Please resist the temptation to examine the nest, we don't want momma duck to leave the eggs unprotected. May we find the same sense of "sanctuary" here as we come to worship.

Synod Assembly

Last weekend was our Synod Assembly (our synod is our gathering of about 200 ELCA congregations in our geographic area and meet to do ministry work together)

Ron and Chris Stanke were there representing Joy Lutheran and you can read their full report by clicking here.

One of the highlights that was shared was that appeal for famine relief in Malawi had reached its completion because after years of drought, the rains have returned  and the harvest is coming in.

Our theme was "Getting the Word Out" and challenged us each to  invite someone to worship.  Why not this weekend?  Invite someone to join you for worship.

If you miss a sermon...

and want to catch up or share it with someone who might appreciate it. We record our worship each week and post it on our web page as well as the bottom of this weekly electronic newsletter.  Just click on the YouTube button.
From Joy's Card Ministry
We are planning to have another card making day before we get into summer and people get busy with vacations. If we can get our rack filled now it should get us through the summer and the next time we would make cards would be at Roen's cabin in September. Let's say we start at 9:00 on Saturday May 13th. We can each bring a small sack lunch and work until we are done or as long as you are able. Hope to see you on the 13th.
Thrivent Financial Updates

Action Team Projects:
Thrivent benefit & associate members, please check out the bulletin board in the hallway for information and sign-up for projects that can be funded with $250 seed money from Thrivent. As of May 1st we have 81 projects listed for the year 2017 with 37 signed-up to lead, 32 applications accepted and 21 projects completed, plus 11 more projects scheduled for completion during May. The bulletin board, the Thrivent table, the Sunday bulletin and the newsletter will be updated each month. As of YTD, we have received $8,000 of seed money from Thrivent and if we complete our proposed 81 projects, we will have received $20,25o.    WOW!    Thank you for your support!

Choice Dollars:
Thrivent benefit members, If you have Thrivent Choice dollars available for use, we have an important message:  You can direct choice $ to any of 1,000+ non-profit organizations. If you choose Joy to receive this money, it will be used to fund the Capital Improvement Fund that Joy desperately needs. Thrivent members of Joy have the potential to direct $3,000 back to Joy. With approx. 85 Thrivent members at Joy, only 20-25 of qualify for this program, but less than half participate. The process is easy and quick - either by phone or on-line. Remember this is Thrivent's money (not yours) and they are giving it away to a non-profit organization of your choice. As of May 1st, members of Joy have directed over $2,000 Choice Dollars to our Capital Improvement Fund.   WOW!    Thank you for your support!

All Members of Joy:
If all of this seems somewhat confusing to you, you're not alone. If you would like more information about these programs or clarification of your Thrivent status, you have three avenues:  1) Check out information on the table in the Narthex.  2) Talk to Jim or Bobbie Flatz in church or at home (715-262-5960).  3) Call Kim at John Levi's Thrivent office at 715-425-2056.

Thrivent is looking for ways to give away millions of dollars with its non-profit status. Let's help them, which in turn supports Joy, the community and many of our outreach programs.

Be part of a Thrivent Action Team

Thousands of dollars are available for us to use projects in our congregation and community...come find out how you can be part of it. Joy has prepared a 2 page informational and guidelines document that will explain the program and ease you through the application process. If you would like to view this, along with a Thrivent document called "101 ways to spark action in your community", click on the link below   Click here

It would be helpful for us to know who in the congregation are members of Thrivent.

Help Collect In-Kind Gifts for the Tenth Triennial WELCA Gathering

The Women of the ELCA's Tenth Triennial Gathering will be held July 13-16, 2017 in Minneapolis.  We are praying that many women from our church will be able to attend this inspiring Gathering.  Check out the bulletin board in the narthex hallway for information on registration, speakers, workshops, tours, worship opportunities, and servant events.  The Gathering theme, All Anew, calls us to look at life in a new way.  Our Women of the ELCA purpose statement calls us to be there for each other.  God call us to make a difference in the world.   Through in-kind gifts, we can do it all:   We can see into the lives of our gift recipients in Minneapolis and around the world.  We can be there for them in relationship and in partnership, and we can make a difference in the world.   Our JWELCA would like to invite our Joy congregation to get involved with us as we make/collect the in-kind gifts we will take to the Gathering this summer.  The recipients of these gifts will be agencies and partners in Minneapolis and also oversees.

The In-Kind Gifts we will be collecting include the following:
  • Quilt Kits (See directions for making these on flier on table in narthex)
  • Gift Cards (to Target, Walmart, Home Depot, Ace Hardware, Visa)
           - $10 minimum - give to Emilie Horken
  • Hygiene Items (see list below - deposit in box in narthex)
  • Clothing (Socks and Underwear in every size and color; white T-shirts for
women, children, men - deposit in box in narthex)
Please use the box in the narthex to deposit In-Kind gifts for the WELCA Triennial Gathering.  We are collecting the following items:  Ethnic hair products, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, bar soap, razors, and skin lotion for women, children, teens and men.  Also needed are hand soap, toothbrushes, feminine hygiene items, towel sets (bath, hand washcloth), baby wipes and diapers in all sizes. Please deposit clothing items, also, in the box.  Following clothing items are needed:  white T-shirts for women, children, teens and men and socks and underwear in every size and color.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP IN THIS IMPORTANT MISSION OUTREACH!

Thank You from the Prayer Shawl Ministry

The Prayer Shawl Ministry would like to say Thank You to all who answered the call to help make more prayer shawls. The response was immediate and very generous. Please continue to create prayer shawls as you are able.
If you have any questions please call Emilie Horken at 262-4728.
People Needed to Make Pairs of Hand-Warmers for the WELCA Triennial Gatherin g
At every Triennial Gathering of the Women of the ELCA, women attending from the various Synods hand out a "token" gift to new friends at the Triennial.  The Synod Women's Board of Northwest Wisconsin is asking for people to make these hand-warmers as gifts.  Many are needed so if you can help with this project, please note the direction sheets on the table in the narthex or on the Triennial Gathering bulletin board in the narthex hallway and make some hand-warmers that we can distribute at the Triennial Gathering in July.  If you have questions about this project, contact Marcia Lindseth or Emilie Horken.  Thanks for your help!

Church Directory

The directories (both picture and address) are ready to pick up...they are also available on the church web page on a password protected page (please call the office for the password).
If you have corrections please let the office know.

Name Tag s... are a great way to help people remember your name.  We are working on a system to have more permanent name tags available, but for now any time you can wear one helps the rest of us get to know you. Thank you.
