 FPC Leadership Retreat 2017

"At the leadership retreat, K. Norman Berry presented their initial ideas to the Session.  It was reassuring that the Session believed Campus Design was moving in the right direction in thinking about ways to redesign our facilities to meet the needs of our congregation and support the ideas heard repeatedly during the AI interviews."                 - Susan Keegan

"Our retreat was an energizing and enlightening experience, especially as we reflected on AI observations. We explored ways to ensure the steps we take today lead us toward the future envisioned in the hopes of our congregation."  - Tyler Murphy

"We explored the Congregation's dreams for FPC's future, through the results of AI and Campus Design studies, and then discussed in a wide-ranging and imaginative way how to turn those dreams into reality, while being sensitive to our past and our financial future."                   - Mary Davis

"It was most heartening for me, as a newcomer, to see the dedication and harmony of those assembled looking forward for our congregation with both enthusiasm and prudence."
- Clyde Kirtley

"We examined the most important values gleaned from Appreciative Inquiry and their interconnection to the master plan of the Campus Design Committee while looking ahead enthusiastically to First Presbyterian Church in the future."             - Nell Line

What did we learn?

In a ten-month process of Appreciative Inquiry (AI), we gathered to have conversations with over thirty groups and heard from over one hundred people. We heard what was most meaningful to them in their time at First Presbyterian Church. We asked what they were dreaming about for our future.

Out of the hundreds of pages of notes, insights, and thoughts from these conversations, the interviewers and note-takers discovered clear themes. There are eight major areas in which we are dreaming about the present and future of FPC.  A summary of these eight areas are below.

∙∙∙

1.   Place matters - We  belong downtown.
2.   People matter - We  care most deeply about the church, the congregation and its outreach, when we are involved and invested.  When we join in working with others with a shared sense of purpose-be it a mission trip, capital campaign, LOGOS, or lunch for the homeless-we feel connected.
3.   Campus matters - Over and over  we heard: How can we use what we have in the best way - for the current congregation and for the future?
4.   Finance matters - Our finances enable our ministry in this place.  We care about being financially strong and working towards this together develops great community.
5.   Programs matter - The meaningful, energetic ways we are together are one of our greatest strengths; people love it. Our time together supports, teaches, and uplifts, both in an individual sense and for groups such as our children.  It creates community and encourages engagement.
6.   Caring matters - Feeling supported and cared for is a deeply meaningful, spiritual experience. In times of crisis, we feel incredibly supported through meals, cards, calls, visits -- all the small ways the congregation steps in to help.
7.  Relationships matter - Some of the strongest social connections we feel in daily life began through church fellowship.  They start there, then grow and develop into continuing bonds.
8.  Diversity matters -We care about being open and diverse -- in viewpoints, age, and background -- and we celebrate these differences.

Music & Arts News
Marlon Hurst, Director of Music & Arts
Thank you for joining us at
the Final Music for Mission Concert in this year's Series:
From Baroque to Broadway

The April 28th concert was a great performance and a time of lovely music.  We raised over $1200 for Sweet Blessings!
FPC Harp Dedication

We are grateful to Tom Harlan, member of First Presbyterian Church, who has donated his grandfather's harp to First Presbyterian Church.  In order for the instrument to receive regular upkeep, it will be housed in the University of Kentucky Harp Studio.  It will be available for use at First Presbyterian whenever a harp is needed.

Tom's grandfather was Thomas Jeffries Harlan.  He was
born in Albemarle County, Virginia on 11/22/1866.  A claims adjuster for the L&N Railroad, he relocated his family to Paris, KY in the early 1920s and became a member of First Presbyterian Church in Paris.  His passion for music manifested itself in his love of playing the harp until his death on 8/23/1956.

The instrument will be dedicated for use to the Glory of God on Sunday, May 7th in the 11:00 am worship.  Elaine Cook, Harp Instructor at the University of Kentucky, will play several pieces in worship on that day.

Youth Ministry News
Kelly Abraham, Director of Youth & Their Families
As LOGOS wraps for the year, I read a chapter in Mark DeVries' book, Family-Based Youth Ministry, about the power of the extended Christian family.  I've got to admit, I'm feeling pretty good about our church this morning.  You may recall, this is the book that pushed me over the edge to say with Susan Combs and Marlon over 6 years ago, "We've got to do LOGOS in our church."  It was clear to us that we believed it was critical to "build supportive, nurturing relationships across the generations - providing an intentional, extended Christian family for our children and teenagers."

First, an "extended Christian family is a community of believers who affirm and encourage growth toward Christian maturity."  Yes, youth need peers who affirm their faith, but youth need adults who can provide a consistent and long-term structure of Christian maturity.  Prior to LOGOS, we had what would be considered to be somewhat of an orphaning structure.  Our Sunday night youth group provided youth with a high degree of support and involvement...with one or two adults.  And outside of the annual mission trips, there wasn't much of a connection with lifelong nurturing structures like the family and extended family.  And when these youth left that orphaning structure (i.e. graduated and stopped coming to Sunday night youth group), the only structure of the church with which they deeply identified, they outgrew.  Today, I spend a great deal of my time reaching out to 20-somethings in an attempt to draw them back into the extended family of our church.  I hear again and again from them that they do not really know anyone at the church except for me.  Ouch.  That makes me sad.   And while I don't feel like that is true, perception is reality.  Fast forward to 2017...

The book, Faithful Parents, Faithful Kids, documents a study of Christian adults that sought to identify which home-based faith-nurturing practices were most likely to have the greatest long-term impact on children.  The study found that there was no single, across-the-board practice that worked in even a slim majority of families - not weekly worship, not weekly Sunday school, not devotions, not even praying with their parents as teenagers.  What was it?  The single faith-nurturing factor present in more than 90% of the families surveyed: youth who stuck with their faith had a half-dozen "mentors" present during their growing up years.  As I sit and reflect on this, I realize I am absolutely a product of this as well.  My teen years were riddled with stress as I experienced the divorce of my parents, a chronically ill parent, an alcoholic parent, etc.  It's not that uncommon, but stressful to a teen nonetheless.  When I think of how I came out of it on the other end with my faith intact, I have to admit it was because of the cloud of witnesses that surrounded and loved me through it.  They were the face of God - my aunts, my uncles, my grandparents, my coaches, my Student Council advisor, my friend's parents, etc.

Every Wednesday from September through March, LOGOS provides consistent adult mentors for 3.5 hours to our children and youth.  I am simply one of them, and that is a good thing. Our high school youth look forward to the 40 minutes they get to spend flinging tough biblical and Presbyterian questions at B. Nicol and Kirk Abraham.  Our youth have loved eating dinner with Leela Foley and Joe & Linsey Albert each and every week.  I have 5 youth who cheer every time Cory Cameron enters the room for Middler Bible study. And I have several middlers who wont sit anywhere but right next to Clare McEachin for Worship Skills and Bible study.  The youth feel valued and I believe the adults do too.  It's these significant experiences with adults, rather than the mountain-top experiences we spend so much energy creating that are making the difference.  In addition, LOGOS has been key at bringing our youth into the extended family of the church as well as drawing our orphaned 20-somethings back. We have 5-10 adults 20-somethings every week of LOGOS mentoring our youth and children.  They have found a way to re-connect to the FPC family.  This is wonderful!

We're doing something right here at FPC.  Let's keep giving our children and youth excuses to build connections with our entire FPC community on Wednesday nights and Sunday mornings.  Let's focus on long-term discipleship in which all of our programming is seen "as an opportunity to connect young people to their own great cloud of witnesses."

See you in church,
Kelly

The Giving Tree is up and it is beautiful!
Now we need you to visit it in the Assembly room!

Here's how it works...

Step 1:
Select a leaf or a heart with a number that has significance to you AND donate that amount of money.

Each family is encouraged to select a number.

Step 2:

Write the reason for selecting that number on the blank side of the leaf/heart and hang it back on the GIVING TREE in its original place...with your words FACING OUT to inspire others to give creatively.

Step 3:

Make a check for the amount on the card, check payable to First Presbyterian Church with Giving Tree written in memo line, place the check (or cash) in the provided envelope.

Drop the envelope in the Sunday offering plate, in Kelly Abraham's office mailbox, OR mail envelope to FPC, 171 Market St, Lexington KY 40507.

IDEAS FOR SELECTING YOUR NUMBER:

  • Your age (or your mother's age or pet's age...)
  • Sum of your kids' ages
  • Anniversary date/Birthday
  • Years you've been a member at First Presbyterian Church
  • Highest number you can afford!
  • Number of FPC ministers you can remember (TIMES 10...)
  • Your lucky/favorite number

 Born Learning Dates for 2017!

Our Born Learning partnership with Arlington Elementary in the fall of 2016 was a great success.  Volunteers worked with over 25 families on six different evenings in September, October, and November.

This year, FPC will again partner with Arlington to provide dinner and also assist Arlington teachers in working with the children while their parents are in class. Volunteers are needed for Shift I and Shift II.  Shift I sets the tables, eats with our guests, cleans up, and should plan to arrive around 4:45.  Shift II, arriving around 5:30, eats with the guests and assists the Arlington teachers with the children's portion of the program.

The dates for the program this fall are the following Tuesdays:

September 12th, 19th, and 26th
October 3rd, 10th and 17th

If you are interested in volunteering with us this fall, please email Susan Keegan at susanskeegan@aol.com or call her at (859) 221-0933. Pam McGee is also available at lobbyistjenkins@gmail.com or (859) 227-2598 to answer any questions.  It is not necessary to commit to all of the dates, especially as they are every week.  Any time you are able to give is welcomed.

We tru ly appreciate the continued enthusiasm with which the congregation embraces this important partnership.  Please do not hesitate to contact a Cornerstone Commission Member for more information.

Haiti Ministry Team Update
The Haiti Ministry Team continues to work with Avelyne and others in Haiti on the clean water project.  To date, through the generous contributions of the congregation as well as other fundraising activities, our Ministry Team has raised almost $14,000 for this project.  We have asked Avelyne to obtain quotes from local contractors to dig a well and install a pump and tank system.  We hope for that work to be completed in the next few months.  Alltech has agreed to pay the cost to dig the well, and our Ministry Team is prepared to work with Living Waters to install a water filtration system if the well water needs to be treated.  If the filtration system is necessary, the total cost of the project would be approximately $30,000.  To cover any additional funds that would be needed, we plan to apply for one or more grants, and we will also continue our fundraising efforts.  Questions may be addressed to any member of the Haiti Ministry Team, Sarah Aubry, Jeff Jefferson, Bill Reed, Courtney LaGrew, Rod Brotherton, Everett McCorvey, Isabel Bandoroff, or Kelly Abraham.
2008 Living Waters for the World Update
As plans for a water system in Haiti proceed, I suspect some will recall that a team from FPC installed a water system in the village of Betania, Mexico in 2008.   Last year , I was in the Yucatan Peninsula for the annual Living Waters for the World sponsored operators' conference.  While there, I was able to visit Betania.  The system appears to be going strong.  Among other things, they started with two storage tanks and have been able to purchase three more to help meet the demand.  When showing folks a photo of the Iversens, one was heard to say:  "Ah, Pastor A-reek."  The challenges in Haiti are different and probably even more difficult, so there are no guarantees, but I think there is every chance that we will meet with similar success in Quanaminthe.

BPPB: BackPack PayBack

My name is Aisha Ndayishimiye and I am the creator of BackPack PayBack!  I have been living in the U.S. since 2007 and First Presbyterian was the church that stood by my family's side.  Now, ten years later, I  want to give back to my country, Bujumbura, Burundi East Africa.  My Project is called BackPack PayBack.  BackPack PayBack is meant to provide back packs, school supplies and funding for students in East Africa.  I have chosen this project because in my country many families do not send their children to school because it is a lot of money and it is unaffordable for many.  Many students who do go to school cannot afford backpacks to carry their school supplies so they carry grocery bags.  Some families that can afford to send their children to school cannot afford the uniform so the children still miss out because uniforms are required.  My project's goal is to provide supplies, backpacks and uniforms for the students every year so that more families can afford to send their students to school.

Here's how you can help!
There is a bin in fellowship room and in that bin you can donate
  • Pens,
  • Pencils
  • Erasers
  • Composition Notebooks
  • !!Backpacks!!
You can also write a check out to the FPC to support the project and write "BPPB" on the memo line.
For further question contact aisha.ndayishimiye@stu.fayette.kyschools.us  or call (859) 270-6798.

Sean Gladding continutes to facilitate a series on Hospitality from Epiphany through Trinity Sunday. The class is exploring the nature of hospitality during three seasons of the church year:

Epiphany - hospitality in light of the Incarnation,
Lent - hospitality in the shadows of Sin, and
Easter - hospitality in light of the New Creation.

All are invited to join the discussion of what it might mean to become more hospitable in the spaces in which we live our lives.
We hope you will join us.

The Lord's Supper

The pattern of the early church was to gather for worship and a meal. The "offering" of bread brought for the meal also included food given to the needy.  For John Calvin, the Word is brought most fully to life when pulpit and table are unified in worship, an understanding that has for many years guided the liturgical practice of our 8:45 am service of worship.

As we consider the relationship between pulpit and table in our 11:00 am services, communion will be served beginning in Advent on November 27th through the celebration of the "Trinity Sunday" on June 11, 2017. This decision of the Discipleship Commission of the Session, is an outgrowth the work of several former committees that had long and meaningful discussions about what First Presbyterian should consider for the current church year and the reflections of Discipleship Commission.

During these weeks, we invite you to think more deeply about the relationship between pulpit and table.  Books that may be of particular interest in your reflections are:  Pulpit and Table by Howard Hageman andCome and See:  Presbyterian Congregations Celebrating Weekly Communion by Ronald P. Byars and John D. Witvliet.

2017 Financial Campaign

Treasurer's Report
Financial Summary March 2017
STRATEGIC OVERVIEW
Revenue was down to slightly below normal levels in March. Expenses were above expectations, largely due to timing on payroll. The budget remains fluid as we explore possible additional revenue and mechanisms to control expenses. Our goal is to be able to finalize a budget later in the year.

Legacy funds remain strong, with the 174 fund balance at $1,141,891, allowing us the possibility in using some of the excess of $1M to pay down the Line of Credit balance.

Please feel free to direct any questions to Eben Hollingsworth (treasurer) or Steve Kelly (Finance Committee Convener).

REVENUES & EXPENSES
Revenue Summary
March total pledge revenue received was $53K, below the monthly budget of $61K.

Expense Summary
Expenses were over budget at $108K for March, against a budget of $104K.

Net Revenues/Expenses
Net revenues for March were -$29K.

N. Mill apartment operating revenue for March was $5245 and operating expenses were $4604, marking our first better than break even month on operations.

We continue in 2017 with a freeze on all discretionary spending.

Contributions to the legacy funds continue to be strong, helping us toward a more financially strong future.
